Regulations for examinations

Classical Tripos

With effect from 1 October 2024

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Classics, has approved amendments to the supplementary regulations for the Preliminary Examination in Classics and the Classical Tripos to update paper details, the consistency of wording and essay requirements, as follows:

Preliminary Examination in Classics

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 265)

Part Ia

By amending the paper description for Paper 4 ‘Literary essay’ so it reads as follows:

Paper 4. Literary essay

A single essay of no more than 2,500 words in length, including notes but excluding bibliography, on a literary topic related to a current set text. The topic is to be chosen from a list of titles to be issued by no later than the end of the Lent Term preceding the examination. The essays shall be typewritten, in English, and shall be submitted in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Board.

Part Ia

Regulation 15.

By correcting the paper numbers referred to in the last two sentences of the regulation from ‘Paper 6 or Paper 7’ to read ‘Paper 7 or Paper 8’.

Part Ib

Schedule F.

By removing the footnote relating to Paper A37 of Part IIa of the Archaeology Tripos being an option under Schedule F.

Regulation 21.

By amending the text of Regulation 21 by including the submission details of essays under Schedule F as follows:

21. Papers in Schedules A, B and H shall each be of three hours’ duration. Papers in Schedules C–E shall each be of two hours’ duration. Papers in Schedule F shall be examined by a submitted essay of not more than 2,500 words in length including notes but excluding bibliography, on topics to be chosen from a list of titles issued by the Faculty Board no later than the eighth Monday of Lent Term. Schedule F essays shall be typewritten, in English, and shall be submitted through the candidate’s Director of Studies to the Director of Undergraduate Studies, in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Faculty Board. Candidates will be required to declare that the essays are their own work and that they do not contain material already used to any substantial extent for a comparable purpose. Where appropriate full and proper acknowledgement must be given to the work of others.

Part II

Group D (Archaeology).

By amending the footnotes in the Group to indicate that all papers in the Group are available to candidates for Part II of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos.

And by amending the footnotes in the Group to remove Paper D3 as an option for candidates for Part IIb of the Archaeology Tripos.

Schedule of Optional Papers

By amending the title of Paper O7. to read ‘Akkadian language (Paper M1 of Part I of the Archaeology Tripos)’.

Regulation 27.

By amending the regulation to allow for an optional oral examination, to read as follows:

(e)Each dissertation shall be examined by two Examiners or by an Examiner and an Assessor, and the candidate may also be examined by them upon it viva voce.

General

By changing instances of the word ‘thesis’ to read ‘dissertation’ throughout the regulations for the Classical Tripos.

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

With effect from 1 October 2024

The Faculty Board of Classics has additionally approved the following amendments to the Supplementary Regulations for the Classical Tripos:

Part Ia

By amending the descriptive text for Paper 4 and Paper 6 to read as follows:

Paper 6. Classical essays

This paper will be examined by the submission of two essays, each of no more than 2,500 words in length, including notes but excluding bibliography, on topics to be chosen from a list of titles to be issued by the Faculty Board by the division of the Lent Term preceding the examination. The list of titles shall be divided into four sections

(a)Greek and Roman philosophy

(b)Greek and Roman history

(c)Greek and Roman art and archaeology

(d)Classical philology and linguistics.

Candidates must choose one title from two sections.

The essays shall be typewritten, in English, and shall be submitted in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Faculty Board.
