Form and conduct of examinations

Notices by Faculty Boards, or other bodies concerned, of changes to the form and conduct of certain examinations to be held in 2019–20, by comparison with those examinations in 2018–19, are published below. Complete details of the form and conduct of all examinations are available from the Faculties or Departments concerned.

Second M.B. Examination: Preparing for Patients C and D

The Faculty Board of Biology and the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine give notice that, with effect from the examinations in 2019–20, the form and conduct of the Preparing for Patients (C and D) element of the Second M.B. Examination (Curriculum Regulations) will be as follows:

Preparing for Patients C

Six compulsory coursework tasks based on community visits to a voluntary (healthcare-related) organisation and an alternative therapy practitioner arranged by candidates in the Long Vacation are required. Coursework as specified in the handbook should be submitted by 4 p.m. on the first day of the Full Michaelmas Term following the vacation in which the visits took place. The tasks will require students to:

(i)understand and critically appraise the services provided to support people with health problems by the agency visited in the community;

(ii)consider how these services interface with the work of primary and secondary health care teams;

(iii)reflect on how visiting this agency has affected their understanding of the provision of health care in society.

Attainment of the qualifying standard in this component of the Second M.B. Preparing for Patients (PFP) Examination will depend on both satisfactory overall rating of coursework and attendance on the course.

Preparing for Patients D

A reflective essay as specified in the handbook based on the home visits arranged by candidates in the Michaelmas and Lent Terms will be required. Coursework should be submitted by 4 p.m. on the last Tuesday of Lent Term. The tasks will require students to:

(i)reflect on their experience of building a deeper understanding of a family through a number of meetings;

(ii)understand the experience of pregnancy for a woman and her family, to appreciate the different professionals involved in maternity care;

(iii)relate the woman’s experience to underlying core science relevant to medicine.

Attainment of the qualifying standard in this component of the Second M.B. Preparing for Patients (PFP) Examination will depend on both satisfactory overall rating of the written part and attendance on the course.
