Regulations for examinations

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos, Part II

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 270)

With effect from 1 October 2016

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, has approved amendments to the regulations governing Part II of the Tripos, so as to remove Paper C.13, Literary Chinese 3, as a paper for the examination in Part II until further notice. The paper will continue to be offered as an optional paper under the provisions of Regulation 8.

Part II

Regulation 21.

C.13 Literary Chinese 3

By removing the paper from the list of papers for the examination in Part II.

Regulation 22.

By amending the regulation for subjects in Chinese; and in Chinese with Japanese so as to read:

(a) Chinese

Candidates shall offer:

(i)Papers C.11–12;

(ii)two papers chosen from the papers announced by the Faculty Board under Regulation 8, provided that only papers prefixed with C may be chosen;

(iii)a dissertation, under conditions set out in Regulation 23.

Candidates shall also offer an oral examination, under conditions set out by the Faculty Board from time to time.

(b) Chinese with Japanese

Candidates shall offer:

(i)Papers J.4–5 from Part Ib of the Tripos;

(ii)Paper C.12;

(iii)either Paper C.11 or Paper C.13, when it has been announced by the Faculty Board under the provisions of Regulation 8;

(iv)two further papers chosen from the papers announced by the Faculty Board under Regulation 8, provided that only papers prefixed with C may be chosen.

Candidates shall also offer a Japanese oral examination, under conditions set out by the Faculty Board from time to time.

This option may only be taken with the permission of the Faculty Board, such permission to be granted no later than the division of the Lent Term of the year next preceding the examination.

The Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies is satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination will be affected.

Medical and Veterinary Sciences Tripos, Part Ia

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 358)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Biology, has approved an amendment to Regulation 15(c)(ii), to change the length of the practical examination (Section II) in Functional Architecture of the Body (FAB) from one and a half hours to seventy-five minutes. This change reflects the current form and conduct of the examination and changes previously approved to the length of the examination. No student shall be disadvantaged by these changes, as the form and conduct of the examination was changed for the 2015 examinations.

Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, Part I: Amendment

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 399)

With effect from 1 October 2016

Further to the Notice published on 24 February 2016 (Reporter, 6416, 2015–16, p. 400) the list of papers available in Part I has been amended so as to introduce a revised title for Paper A5.

GROUP A

Paper A5. God and not God

By removing the title of the paper and replacing it with a revised title so as to read:

Paper A5. The question of God

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

With effect from the same date, the Supplementary Regulations for the Tripos have been amended so as to introduce a revised title and description for Paper A5.

Paper A5. God and not God

By removing the current title and replacing it with the following title:

Paper A5. The question of God

The description for the paper remains unchanged.

The Faculty Board of Divinity is satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2017 will be affected.

Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, Parts IIa and IIb

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 399)

With effect from 1 October 2016

The list of papers available in Parts IIa and IIb has been amended so as to introduce revised titles for certain papers, and so as to suspend certain papers in 2016–17, as detailed below.

Regulation 18.

GROUP B

Paper B2. The literature, history, and theology of the exilic age

By removing the title of the paper and replacing it with a revised title so as to read:

By removing Paper D1 (b) from the narrative and amending the sentence so as to read:

Papers in this group except D1 (a) and (f) shall be examined by the submission of two essays in accordance with Regulation 20.

(a) Old Testament

This paper will be suspended in 2016–17.

(c) A topic to be announced by the Faculty Board from time to time.

Paper D2.

(a) A topic in the history of Christianity

This paper will be suspended in 2016–17.

By removing the current title and replacing it with the following title:

Master of Law

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 441)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board for the Faculty of Law, has approved an amendment to the regulations so as to enable full responsibility for the LL.M. Degree to lie with the Faculty Board, by bringing the approval of candidates and prescribing the course of study for candidates within the purview of the Faculty Board instead of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Law.

By amending Regulations 5(a) and 5(b) so as to read:

(a)must be approved by the Faculty Board, who shall assign to each candidate a date of commencement of candidatures;

and

(b)shall pursue in the University a course of study prescribed by the Faculty Board, which shall extend over three terms;

By amending Regulation 6 so as to read:

6. The Faculty Board may approve as a candidate for the LL.M. Examination any student who has satisfied the Board that by reason of previous study of law he or she is qualified to engage in postgraduate study of law at an advanced level.

In giving approval the Board may require a student

(a)to obtain such class or grade as they may think fit in any examination taken or to be taken by the student;

(b)to be a candidate for the LL.M. Examination in a particular year specified by the Faculty Board.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Curriculum Regulations), Second M.B. Examination

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 445)

With immediate effect

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Boards of Biology and Clinical Medicine, has approved amendments to Regulations 9(a), 9(g), and 9(h). The revisions are to make previously approved changes to the length of examinations for Functional Architecture of the Body (FAB) and Head and Neck Anatomy (HNA), and to reflect the current form and conduct of the examination. The examination in FAB will be removed from Regulation 9(a); Section II of the examination in FAB will be reduced from one and a half hours to seventy-five minutes in Regulation 9(h); the examination in HND will be reduced from one hour to forty-five minutes in Regulation 9(g). No student shall be disadvantaged by these changes, as the form and conduct of the examination was changed for the 2015 examinations.

By amending paragraphs (a), (g), and (h) of Regulation 9 so as to read:

(a)The examinations in BOD, HOM, MIMS, and MODA shall each consist of a written paper of one hour, which shall contain compulsory short-answer questions (Section I), and a practical examination of two hours (Section II).

(g)The examination in HNA shall consist of a practical paper of forty-five minutes consisting of two sections (Section I and Section II).

(h)The examination in FAB shall consist of a written paper of forty-five minutes, which shall contain compulsory short-answer questions (Section I), and a practical examination of seventy-five minutes (Section II).

Doctor of Music

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 467)

With immediate effect

The regulations for the degree of Doctor of Music have been amended in order that the Professor of Music may nominate another person to act as a candidate’s referee on their behalf.

Regulation 5.

By amending the first sentence of the Regulation so as to read:

If such Committee shall be of opinion that these compositions constitute prima facie a qualification or the degree, they shall obtain separate reports upon them from the Professor of Music, or a person nominated by the Professor of Music, and from not less than two additional persons, who may be members of the Committee or not.

Examination in Economic Research for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 489)

With effect from 1 October 2017

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board for the Faculty of Economics, has approved an amendment to the regulations so as to change the number of compulsory modules from six to seven and the number of additional modules from two to one.

By amending Regulation 1(a) so as to read:

(a)seven compulsory and one additional module, selected from a list of core and optional modules published by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Economics, which shall each be examined by a written paper of two hours’ duration;

Examination in Economics for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 490)

With effect from 1 October 2017

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board for the Faculty of Economics, has approved an amendment to the regulations so as to change the number of compulsory modules from three to six and the number of additional modules from five to two.

By amending Regulation 1(a) so as to read:

(a)six compulsory and two additional modules, selected from a list of core and optional modules published by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Economics, which shall each be examined by a written paper of two hours’ duration;

Examination in Environmental Policy for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 492)

With effect from 1 October 2017

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Department of Land Economy, has approved an amendment to the regulations to allow for greater focus on core modules and to introduce a greater degree of progression in the subjects.

By deleting Regulations 3 and 4 and amending Regulations 1 and 2 so as to read:

1. The Degree Committee for the Department of Land Economy shall publish, not later than the end of the Easter Term each year, a list of modules for the examination to be held in the academical year next following. The list shall include a research methods module, two core modules, and no fewer than four optional modules (the Degree Committee may specify that a candidate shall offer one or more specific modules). In publishing the list the Degree Committee shall announce whether each module is to be examined by a written paper, by an essay or project, or by a combination of these; they shall specify the limits to be placed on the length of any essays or projects.

2. Each candidate shall offer:

(a)the research methods module;

(b)two core modules;

(c)three optional modules;

(d)the research, design, and structure module, which shall include a thesis of not more than 12,000 words in length, including diagrams, footnotes, tables, and appendices, but excluding bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee.

Examination in Planning, Growth, and Regeneration for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 506)

With effect from 1 October 2017

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Department of Land Economy, has approved an amendment to the regulations to allow for greater focus on core modules and to introduce a greater degree of progression in the subjects.
