Regulations for examinations

Architecture Tripos, Parts Ia, Ib, and II

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 284)

With immediate effect

The regulations for the Tripos have been amended in order that course-work elements, together with the processes for their assessment for Papers 3, 4, and 5 in Parts Ia and Ib, and Papers 2 and 3 in Part II, are more clearly articulated and described; and in order that administrative procedures for submission of the portfolio in Parts Ib and II, and the thesis (or alternative exercise) in Part II are revised and clarified. The changes will provide a clearer explanation of the purpose, place, and process of course-work within the Tripos; and exclude the bibliography from the word count of the thesis.

Part Ia

Regulation 12.

By amending the first sentence of the current regulation so as to read:

The examination for Part Ia of the Architecture Tripos shall consist of two sections:

And by removing ‘Section C. Course-work.’

Regulation 13.

By amending sub-paragraph (a) of the current regulation so as to read:

(a)to offer all five papers in Section A. Papers 1 and 2 will be examined by a written paper of three hours’ duration. Papers 3–5 will be examined by a combination of a written paper of three hours’ duration and such course-work as may be determined by the course teachers and submitted during the academical year. For this purpose the teachers under whose direction the work was performed will present to the Examiners detailed reports on the performance of each candidate in the course-work. The proportion of marks to be assigned to the course-work in each paper shall be published by the Faculty Board by notice in the Department not later than the beginning of the Full Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination;

By amending sub-paragraph (b) of the regulation so as to read:

(b)for Section B, to present for the inspection of the Examiners, on a date agreed in the Easter Term published by the Faculty Board by notice in the Department not later than the beginning of the Full Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination, a portfolio of studio-work carried out during the current academical year and attested by satisfactory evidence.

And by removing sub-paragraph (c), together with the final sentence of the regulation.

Part Ib

Regulation 14.

By amending the first sentence of the current regulation so as to read:

The examination for Part Ib of the Architecture Tripos shall consist of two sections:

By amending the second sub-paragraph of the regulation describing Section A so as to read:

(ii)Three introductory papers (Papers 3–5) on technical topics concerning the theory and practice of construction and of structural and environmental design. Papers 3–5 will be examined by a combination of written papers of three hours’ duration and such course-work as may be determined by the course teachers and submitted during the academical year.

And by removing ‘Section C. Course-work.’

Regulation 15.

By amending sub-paragraph (a) of the current regulation so as to read:

(a)for Section A, to offer Papers 1–5, subject to the qualifications that candidates cannot address in Paper 2 a topic chosen for an essay in Paper 1, and each essay must be on a separate topic. Candidates will be required to declare that the essays are their own work. They shall be submitted by the candidate to the Secretary of the Faculty Board, in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Faculty Board. Teachers under whose direction course-work for Papers 1–3 was performed will present to the Examiners detailed reports on the performance of each candidate in this course-work. The proportion of marks to be assigned to the course-work in each paper shall be published by the Faculty Board by Notice in the Department not later than the beginning of the Full Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination;

By amending sub-paragraph (b) of the regulation so as to read:

(b)for Section B, to present for the inspection of the Examiners, on the date determined by the Faculty Board at the end of the Easter Term, and published by the Faculty Board by notice in the Department not later than the beginning of the Full Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination, a portfolio of studio-work carried out during the current academical year and attested by satisfactory evidence.

By removing sub-paragraph (c) of the regulation.

And by removing the final two paragraphs of the regulation, and replacing them with two paragraphs so as to read:

Detailed instructions will be issued by the Department, by the division of the Michaelmas Term preceding the examination, regarding the coverage of prescribed texts and topics and any other requirements for the portfolio as a whole. Candidates may be called for viva voce examination in connection with their portfolios.

The Examiners shall be provided by the Head of the Department with assessments of all the course-work carried out by candidates of which records have been presented under (a).

Part II

Regulation 16.

By amending the first sentence of the current regulation so as to read:

The examination for Part II of the Architecture Tripos shall consist of three sections:

By removing ‘Section C. Course-work.’

By redesignating the thesis or alternative exercise from Section D to Section C.

And by removing the final two sentences of the regulation, replacing them with three paragraphs so as to read:

Paper 1 in Section A shall be examined by a written paper, which shall be of three hours’ duration.

Papers 2 and 3 in Section A shall be examined by written papers of three hours’ duration and such course-work as may be determined by the course teachers and submitted during the academical year. For this purpose the teachers under whose direction the work was performed will present to the Examiners detailed reports on the performance of each candidate in the course-work. The proportion of marks to be assigned to the course-work in each paper shall be published by the Faculty Board by notice in the Department not later than the beginning of the Full Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination.

Paper 4 in Section A shall be examined by the submission of course-work. For this purpose the teachers under whose direction the work was performed will present to the Examiners detailed reports on the performance of each candidate in this course-work.

Regulation 17.

By amending sub-paragraphs (b) and (c) of the current regulation so as to read:

(b)for Section B, to present for the inspection of the Examiners, on the date determined by the Faculty Board at the end of the Easter Term published by the Faculty Board by notice in the Department not later than the beginning of the Full Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination, a portfolio of studio-work carried out during the current academical year and attested by satisfactory evidence;

(c)for Section C, to submit a thesis, or an alternative exercise approved by the Faculty Board, in accordance with the provisions of Regulations 18 and 19.

And by removing sub-paragraph (d), together with the final sentence of the regulation.

Regulation 18.

By amending the first sentence of sub-paragraph (a) of the current regulation so as to read:

(a)Not later than 1 June each year the Faculty Board shall publish by notice in the Department of Architecture a list of subject areas for the thesis or other exercise required for Section C in the examination to be held in the following academical year.

Regulation 19.

By amending the first two sentences of the current regulation so as to read:

A thesis presented under Regulation 17(c) shall be of not less than 7,000 words and not more than 9,000 words in length, including notes, appendices, but excluding bibliography; an alternative exercise shall be of comparable substance. Each thesis shall be submitted through the Secretary of the Faculty Board to the Head of the Department of Architecture in accordance with detailed arrangements approved by the Board.

The Faculty Board of Architecture and the History of Art are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2015 will be adversely affected.

Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, Part II

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 388)

With immediate effect

The title of paper Fr.10. has been changed from French literature, thought, and history from 1690–1799 to Enlightenment and its limits. It will continue to serve as Paper 37 of Part II of the English Tripos.

Regulation 29.

SCHEDULE B

French

Fr.10. French literature, thought, and history from 1690 to 1799 (also serves as Paper 37 of Part II of the English Tripos).

By amending the title of the paper to:

Fr.10. Enlightenment and its limits (also serves as Paper 37 of Part II of the English Tripos).

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2015 will be affected.

Natural Sciences Tripos, Part II: Correction

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 410)

With effect from 1 October 2015

In the Notice published on 12 November 2014 (Reporter, 6364, 2014–15, p. 138), the amendment to Regulation 30 concerning the subject of examination ‘Neuroscience’ should have read:

By amending the scheme of examination for the subject of examination ‘Neuroscience’ by deleting the final two paragraphs.

Examination in History of Art and Architecture for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 532)

With effect from 1 October 2015

The scheme of examination set out within the special regulations for the above course of study has been amended. The required maximum word count for each of the two essays has been changed from 4,000 to 6,000; and the requirement for a candidate to offer two presentations has been removed.

Regulation 1.

By removing sub-paragraph (iii) and amending sub-paragraph (ii) so as to read:

(ii)two essays, each not exceeding 6,000 words in length, on topics approved by the Degree Committee.
