COLLEGE ACCOUNTANT

SEESOX/ALPHA BANK VISITING FELLOWSHIP ON THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF SOUTH EAST EUROPE FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2010–11

St Antony’s College seeks a candidate who will undertake research on the political economy of SE Europe, in one of the following indicative areas: post-communist political, economic, and/or social developments; foreign direct investment in the region; reform and European integration; developments in transport, energy, migration; regional cooperation and regional initiatives.

The candidate must submit a full research proposal which should be related to at least one of the above areas. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. study in one of the following fields of social sciences: politics, economics, political economy, international relations. They should also have a very good working knowledge of English.

The Fellowship is for three terms, starting October 2010 until June 2011, and carries a stipend of £21,500 a year.

SUPERNUMERARY TEACHING FELLOWSHIP IN CLASSICAL LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

St John’s College invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a five-year fixed-term Supernumerary Teaching Fellowship (without membership of Governing Body) in Classical Languages and Literature, with effect from 1 October 2010. The successful candidate will have research interests in the literature of the Classical period (that is between ca. 800 bc and ca. ad 500), in Ancient Greek and/or Latin, and the ability to teach a range of core subjects in one, or, preferably, both, languages and their literatures.

The person appointed will teach undergraduates reading for the Honour School of Literae Humaniores and the associated Joint Schools (Classics and English, Classics and Modern Languages, Classics and Oriental Studies) up to a maximum of eight hours each week during term. He or she will take responsibility for the character, organization, and delivery of all the College’s undergraduate teaching in Ancient Greek and Latin languages and literature, including supervising arrangements made from time to time for extra language teaching, and will represent these subjects, in collaboration with the Tutors in Ancient History and Philosophy and the Joint Schools, in the planning of all aspects of these degree courses at St John’s. He or she will also, therefore, participate in the undergraduate admissions process, share pastoral duties, and take part in College outreach activities. The election to the Fellowship will be for one year in the first instance, and renewable thereafter for up to four years, subject to a satisfactory report on the first year’s duties. The Fellow will be a member of the University’s Classics Faculty (Sub-faculty of Classical Languages and Literature) and so part of Oxford’s lively and successful Classics community, but will not be required to undertake University teaching, examining, or administration, though he or she may do so with the approval of the College; and the Fellow will be encouraged to offer one course of eight University lectures each academic year during the first four years of the appointment.

The person elected will already hold a Doctorate and will be expected to engage in original research. A period of sabbatical leave will be made available in the final year of the appointment, to permit the Fellow to further her or his research.

The annual salary will be on the incremental scale of £27,183 to £30,594 (subject to revision in line with any general salary increases).

The person appointed will teach undergraduates reading for the Honour School of Modern Languages and the associated Joint Schools (Classics and Modern Languages, English and Modern Languages, European and Middle Eastern Languages, History and Modern Languages, Philosophy and Modern Languages) up to a maximum of eight hours each week during term. He or she will also play a full part in the organization of teaching in St John’s for undergraduates reading French for the Honour School of Modern Languages and the associated Joint Schools, share pastoral duties, and participate in year abroad arrangements and the undergraduate admissions process. The election to the Fellowship will be for one year in the first instance, and renewable thereafter for up to four years, subject to a satisfactory report on the first year’s duties. No duties are required for the University, and the approval of the College must be sought before any are undertaken. Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford

THE IDEL AND ISAAC HAASE FELLOWSHIP AND UNIVERSITY RESEARCH LECTURERSHIP IN EASTERN EUROPEAN JEWISH CIVILIZATION

The Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and the Faculty of Oriental Studies in the University of Oxford seek a scholar to fill a new fixed-term position in Eastern European Jewish Civilization. The Fellowship has been established through a generous gift in order to promote study of the history, religion, literature, or culture of the Jews of Eastern Europe up to the early 20th century.

The successful candidate will have been awarded a Doctorate or equivalent qualification in some aspect of the study of Eastern European Jewish Civilization. He or she will have a record of scholarly publications and a commitment to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Knowledge of Hebrew and Yiddish and of the religious movements and intellectual developments within Eastern European Jewish Civilization is essential. Priority may be given to candidates whose research includes use of the relevant special collections in the Bodleian Library.

Starting salary, depending on qualifications and experience, will be not less than £35,469 a year. A higher salary could be made available to a leading senior scholar with a substantial record of world-class publications.

The appointment will be for a fixed period of five years from 1 October 2010. The appointment will be made jointly by the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and the Faculty Board of Oriental Studies of the University of Oxford. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Fellowship in Eastern European Jewish Civilization of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and to a University Research Lecturership of the University of Oxford within the Faculty of Oriental Studies. The Fellow will also be a member of the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Unit and will be eligible for membership of one of the University Faculties (depending on her or his area of specialization).

The Fellow will be expected to conduct research and teaching in the field of Eastern European Jewish Civilization. In addition, as a University Research Lecturer the post-holder will be expected to teach, supervise, and examine undergraduate and graduate students and to play a part in the administrative work of the Faculty.
