Energy Efficient Cities University Lecturer in Transport Technology in the Department of Engineering

The University of Cambridge and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council are making a strategic investment around the theme of 'Energy Efficient Cities'. The aim is to strengthen the UK's capacity to address energy demand reduction in cities. The funding provides for three University Lectureships in the Departments of Engineering and Architecture with over £1m of associated direct research support in the form of three positions for post-doctoral research associates, four research studentships, and about £400,000 for equipment, consumables, and travel.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the Engineering Lectureship in Transport Technology based in the Energy, Fluid Mechanics, and Turbomachinery Division. The successful candidate will be expected to take an imaginative approach to future city transport. Methodologies and models for assessing the complex and changing energy use associated with current and prospective forms of transport need to be developed. Critical evaluation of the life cycle analyses of such technologies is seen as being especially important. Candidates may have interests and relevant background in one or more of the following areas: achieving high efficiency and low emissions with extreme engine downsizing; ultra-light weight vehicles; sensors and smart computer-based systems; improved energy storage devices for electric/hybrid vehicles; and integration of building and vehicle power supply. Any candidates who feel that they can contribute to the overall aims of the project with other expertise(s) are also encouraged to apply. An ability to teach one or more of the following subjects at undergraduate level would be an advantage: fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mathematics.

A willingness to collaborate, an ability to develop a systems-level view, and to address multi-disciplinary optimization would be important. The successful candidate will have or be expected to develop a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international reputation and top-rank research rating. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to undergraduate courses, supervising final-year projects, and supervising graduate students.

The successful candidate will take up the appointment as soon as possible.

The appointment will be for a probationary period of five years and, subject to satisfactory performance, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The salary will be in the range of £34,793 to £44,074 a year.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Ann Dowling (email apd1@cam.ac.uk, tel. +44 (0)1223 332739).

Further particulars may be obtained from the website (http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/admin/jobsinfo/Transport_Technology.pdf) or from the Head of Department's Office (Personnel), Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1PZ, UK (tel +44 (0)1223 332615, fax +44 (0)1223 766364, email enghead@eng.cam.ac.uk). Applications should be sent to this address no later than Friday, 12 September 2008. Applicants should complete parts I and III of the PD18 form and submit this together with a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, the names of three referees, and a brief statement of research interests and future plans (no more than two pages).

Isaac Newton Trust Affiliated Lecturer in the Department of Land Economy

In association with the Isaac Newton Trust, the Department of Land Economy wishes to appoint a Newton Trust College Teaching Officer (CTO) to commence on 1 October 2008.

Under the terms of the scheme, the Department is authorized to appoint an existing CTO as an Affiliated Lecturer for a period of between two and five years. The expectation of the Trust is that persons newly appointed under the scheme should normally have less than ten years of post-doctoral work experience (taking account of career breaks). It is possible that a person who has previously held an Isaac Newton Trust Lectureship may be appointed, though the Trust reserves the right to restrict the tenure of that second appointment to a period shorter than five years, and in particular requires that no individual shall hold such an appointment for more than eight years in total. A Newton Trust CTO is expected to give 24 lectures a year in the Department, to examine from time to time, to supervise research students, and to be involved in departmental teaching arrangements. Further detailed information about the terms and conditions of Newton Trust CTOs can be found at http://www.newtontrust.cam.ac.uk/cam/schemes/cto/b.html.

Applications, comprising a completed PD18 form (parts I and III only), a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a short statement (no more than one side) in support of the application and outlining the expected contribution to teaching in Land Economy should be sent to Laura Smethurst, Administrative Officer, Department of Land Economy, 19 Silver Street, Cambridge, CB3 9EP (or email lcs38@cam.ac.uk) to arrive no later than 15 August 2008. Further information about the Department of Land Economy is available at http://www.landecon.cam.ac.uk/.
