Theological and Religious Studies Tripos, 2008: Amendment

Further to their Notice of 28 November 2007 (Reporter, p. 292), the Faculty Board of Divinity give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2008, the form of the examination for the Theological and Religious Studies Tripos will be changed as follows:

Part I

Paper A2. One God? Hearing the Old Testament

The examination will consist of a three-hour written paper. The paper will contain passages for comment from the prescribed texts, as well as essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer a gobbet question (requiring comments on four passages from a choice of seven) and three essay questions from a choice of about twelve. Each question will be worth 25% of the total marks.

NRSV Bibles will be available for use in the examination, but candidates are not expected to show greater precision in biblical references as a result of the availability of these Bibles.

Paper A6. Understanding contemporary religion

The examination will consist of a three-hour written paper. Candidates will be required to answer four questions from a choice of at least twelve.

Parts IIA and IIB

Paper B1(c). Intermediate languages and texts: Sanskrit

The examination will consist of a three-hour written paper. Candidates will be required to translate three passages from the prescribed texts from Sanskrit into English, to answer questions on their language and content, and to translate one unseen passage from Sanskrit to English.

Paper B1(d). Intermediate languages and texts: Qur'anic Arabic

The examination will consist of a three-hour written paper. Candidates will be required to translate one out of two passages from the Qur'an, commenting on specified words and concepts, and three out of four passages from the remaining texts, to point one out of two passages, selected from any of the prescribed passages, and to translate one text from English into Arabic.

Paper B5. Jesus in Gospel tradition

The examination will take the form of a three-hour written paper. This will consist of two sections. Candidates will be required to attempt the one question in Section A, and three further questions from Section B. Section A will contain four passages for comment from John 18-21, of which candidates will be required to attempt three. Section B will contain at least twelve essay questions, of which candidates will be required to attempt three.

Paper B6. Belief and practice in the early Church (Amendment to the Notice published on p. 292)

The examination will take the form of a three-hour written paper consisting of two sections. Candidates will be required to answer four questions, including at least two from Section A and one from Section B. Section A will contain questions on the recommended primary texts. Section B will contain questions on selected forms of the practice of Christianity; in 2007-08 these will focus on biblical interpretation and worship in the early Church.

Paper B8. Study of theology I

The examination will take the form of a three-hour written paper. There will be at least fourteen questions. Candidates must answer three questions.

Paper C1(c). Advanced language and texts: Sanskrit

The examination will consist of a three-hour written paper. Candidates will be required to translate three passages from the prescribed texts from Sanskrit into English, to answer questions on their language and content, and to translate one unseen passage from Sanskrit to English.

Paper C9. Islam II

The examination for this paper will consist of a three-hour written paper divided into two sections, corresponding to the specified topics. Each section will contain at least eight questions. Candidates will be required to attempt four questions, at least one from each section.
