The Court of Discipline met on 14 May 2003 to consider a charge brought by the University Advocate on a complaint by the Head of a University Department against an undergraduate member of the University. The members of the Court were: Mr A. D. Yates (Chairman) R, Mrs N. Blanning, JN, Mr A. D. Lemons, HH, Ms C. Hibell, HO, Mr B. D. J. Reid, Q. The Administrative Secretary acted as Clerk of the Court with Mr I. D. Troupe (Senior Assistant Registrary) as his deputy. The Chairman accepted the defendant's request that the Court should sit in camera.
The defendant was charged with misappropriating a University owned computer which contained important research results. The defendant pleaded guilty to a modified charge of possession of the machine. The Advocate outlined the circumstances of the case. The defendant's representative presented the defendant's case and a witness was heard. The Court concluded that the full charges brought by the Advocate were proved and imposed a penalty of a fine of £500 and an order to pay compensation in respect of the costs of the Department concerned up to £600.
