Report of the General Board on the establishment of an East Asia Institute in the Faculty of Oriental Studies: Notice

15 May 2000

The Council have received the remarks made at the Discussion of this Report on 2 May 2000 (see p. 673). They will ask the General Board to consider Dr Evans's comments in so far as they fall within the Board's sphere of responsibility.

As far as Data Protection matters are concerned, the Council has set up a Working Party to advise them on the implications for the University of the implementation of the Data Protection Act 1998. The Working Party is currently in the process of preparing its report, which it expects to submit to the Council in July. The Working Party has been considering the issues raised by Dr Evans, including the need for records management and staff training, and will address these in its report.

The Council note that Dr Evans's remarks were not against the recommendations of the Report, and are therefore submitting a Grace to the Regent House (Grace 4, p. 694) for the approval of these recommendations.
