Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Medicine

Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Medicine, assigned to the Clinical Pharmacology Unit, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The person appointed will be of the standing required for an honorary contract of service with the NHS Executive Eastern Region as a Specialist Registrar and will be required to undertake clinical work, teaching, and research. Teaching will include acting as a Clinical Supervisor to a group of students.

The appointment will be for four years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Clinical Lecturer is £23,300 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £40,285.

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the Institute of Astronomy

University Lecturer in astronomy or astrophysics in the Institute of Astronomy, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 or thereabouts. Candidates are sought with experience in any area of theory or observation. The Institute's current activities include work in cosmology and large-scale structure of the Universe, the formation, structure, and evolution of galaxies, quasars, high-energy astrophysics, stellar dynamics, N-body simulations, star formation and evolution, accretion discs, helio and asteroseismology, gravitational lensing, numerical hydrodynamics, measurement of stellar radial velocities, and instrumentation for large optical and IR telescopes. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to these or other research programmes and interact with the other members of the Institute, as well as astronomers in other related Departments in Cambridge. The appointee would also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching needs of the Institute.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the School of Education

The School of Education aims to strengthen Cambridge's national and international reputation as a leading centre for study and research in education and as a significant contributor to improving educational practice in partnership with schools, colleges, and other educational agencies. The successful candidates will be active educational researchers and will contribute to teaching within the School's highly regarded programmes of initial teacher education, continuing professional development, advanced study, and research. Two posts are available from 1 September 2000 and the other from 1 October 2000.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in English Education and Geography Education (two posts). These appointments will enhance the School's existing strengths in teacher education. Candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience both in subject teaching and in educational research. The post-holders will take a major responsibility for preparing secondary teachers in the respective subjects within the Faculty's P.G.C.E. partnership with schools, and will contribute to continuing professional development and higher degree work in the field.

University Lecturer in School Management and Educational Leadership. This appointment will enhance the School's existing strengths in the broad area of educational leadership. Candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience in both teacher development and school improvement, and the ability to apply this experience in innovative research and evaluation projects. We are seeking to appoint someone who can give practical support and theoretical guidance to school leaders and managers in their efforts to improve their schools, to promote the professional development of their staff, and especially to foster effective teaching and learning in classrooms. The post-holder will take a major responsibility for continuing professional development and higher degree work in the field.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the field of Commonwealth and International Literature in English, with effect from 1 October 2000 or 1 January 2001. Applications will be welcomed from candidates with qualifications and research interests in any aspect of the field of colonial and post-colonial literatures in English, and preference may be given to those able to teach in more than one of the areas covered by the field.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the area of computational linguistics and natural language processing, to take up appointment on 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated ability or clear potential to conduct research at an international level of excellence in their chosen speciality. Candidates will also be expected to have proven teaching abilities. The person appointed will be required to make a significant contribution to the teaching and organization of the M.Phil. in Computer Speech and Language Processing.

Computer Officer, Grade I (PC Support Leader), in the University Computing Service

The University Computing Service, which provides facilities and services in support of research and teaching, has a vacancy in the Technical User Services Division for a PC Support Leader. The successful applicant will be responsible for leading a small team which provides Microsoft operating systems and PC applications support to other technical staff and users throughout the University. He or she will be primarily responsible for the NT-Support Service and will be expected to contribute to the Service's TechLink programme, which provides targeted support to other IT staff within the University. The applicant will be expected to take a leading role in determining the Service's advice and policy in this area. The applicant should have at least five years' experience in the delivery of IT support and training and must possess interpersonal and organizational skills.

The appointment will be for up to three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade I, is £19,869 a year, rising by twelve annual increments to £32,095.

Assistant Keeper in the Fitzwilliam Museum

Assistant Keeper (Manuscripts and Printed Books and Reference Library), to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Initially the post-holder will be responsible to the Director for the Museum's collections of manuscripts and early printed books and Reference Library, although eventually the reorganization of the department may lead to a reallocation of the duties of the post-holder. Applicants should have a university degree in a relevant subject and either a postgraduate qualification in library studies or appropriate experience.

The appointment is for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure for an Assistant Keeper is five years, but holders of the office may be considered for possible appointment to the office of Senior Assistant Keeper during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Keeper is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

Senior Assistant Registrary in the University Offices (General Board Division)/Secretary of the School of the Biological Sciences

Senior Assistant Registrary, to take up appointment on 1 October 2000. The School of the Biological Sciences contains two Faculties (Biology and Clinical Veterinary Medicine) and ten Departments, with a total of 238 academic staff and 583 unestablished research staff. The administration of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, which is also within the School, is carried out at a local level. As the School's senior administrator, the person appointed will work closely with the Chairman of the School, act as Secretary to the Council of the School and some of its committees, and have responsibility for other administrative officers of the Unified Administrative Service within the School. The Secretary will be expected to take an active role in supporting the formulation of policy, particularly concerning resource management. The Secretary is assisted by an Assistant Registrary, an Administrative Officer, and a secretarial team within the School Office. Candidates should be graduates, numerate, preferably (but not necessarily) with a degree in Biology, and have substantial administrative experience, ideally within Higher Education.

The pensionable stipend for a Senior Assistant Registrary is £35,670 a year. The appointment will be for three years, unless that requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

Two posts in the University Offices (Finance Division)

Applications are invited for the following new posts, arising as a consequence of the University implementing the Oracle Financials accounting system, which will make large improvements to the production of financial information at the University:

Assistant Treasurer (Systems Accountant)

Assistant Treasurer (Systems Accountant) in the Finance Division. Reporting to the Financial Accountant, the post-holder will develop the accounting systems and maintain the control structures and the integrity of the data held thereon. Initially the post-holder will also work with the project team setting up the new system and establishing operating procedures with user Departments across the University.

Applicants will be qualified ACA, ACCA, or CIPFA, have at least three years' post-qualification experience gained working in a large finance department, and have strong PC skills. Knowledge of a major modular accounting system, preferably Oracle Financials, is also essential.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Treasurer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Administrative Officer, Grade II (Systems Administrator)

Administrative Officer, Grade II (Systems Administrator), in the Finance Division. Reporting to the Systems Accountant, the post-holder will perform and develop the system data control procedures and maintain the chart of accounts. Initially the post-holder will also work with the project team setting up the new system and establishing operating procedures with user Departments across the University.

Applicants will have at least five years' accounting experience gained working in a large finance department, be qualified AAT or part qualified ACA, ACCA, or CIPFA, and have strong PC skills. Knowledge of Oracle Financials would be advantageous but is not essential.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479.

Temporary Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Politics

Applications are invited for a temporary Lectureship in Economic Theory, tenable for three years from 1 October 2000. The appointment is to provide replacement teaching while Professor C. J. Harris holds a British Academy Research Professorship. Appointment will be made at a level equivalent to that of a University Lecturer, at a salary commensurate with age and experience, in the range £20,811-£32,095 a year.

Research Associates in the Department of Engineering

Research Associate in Structural Integrity and Optimal Design

Research Associate to work on a project aimed at the development of new techniques (probabilistic and possibilistic) for the assessment of structural integrity and the incorporation of these techniques within optimal design methods. The project is funded jointly by the EPSRC and DERA and will also involve collaboration with British Aerospace plc. The Research Associate will have completed a Ph.D. Degree in an appropriate subject and will have experience in reliability theory and the analysis of uncertain structures. The appointment is for three years, starting on 1 September 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary is in the range £16,286-£18,185 a year.

Research Associate in Turbomachinery Noise

A position exists for a Research Associate to work on the application of unsteady CFD to the prediction of aero-engine turbomachinery noise. The project is funded by the European Commission as part of the Fifth Framework RTD-Project, 'Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Aero-Engine', and will involve collaboration with a consortium of industries (including Rolls-Royce in the UK) and university departments of engineering and applied mathematics. The aim of the project is to study the prediction by unsteady CFD of the multiple tone noise and distortion noise generated by the transonic fan in an aero-engine together with the interaction noise associated with the downstream guide vanes and to couple the process to duct acoustic propagation models via 'Smart Boundary conditions'. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. Degree or an equivalent background. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in unsteady CFD or Computational Aero Acoustics, preferably in an Aerospace context. The appointment will be for three years starting on 1 August 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary will be in a range up to £18,915 a year.
