Applications are invited for the following University office:

University Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory

University Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory, to take up appointment on 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated ability or clear potential to conduct research at an international level of excellence in their chosen speciality, which can be in any area of Computer Science. Candidates will also be expected to have proven teaching abilities. The person appointed will be required to teach central subjects in Computer Science in addition to their own specialities.

The appointment will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Curriculum and IT Systems Manager in the Faculty of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited for a three-year unestablished post of Curriculum and IT Systems Manager in the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post-holder will develop, implement, and maintain computerized and general administrative systems to support all the activities of the Curriculum Division of the School Office. Key areas will be the co-ordination of clinical student assessment from Attachment Reports to Final M.B., including student and staff records, feedback, and analysis of results. The post-holder will also maintain overall responsibility for the direction, support, and training of Curriculum Division assistant staff, working closely with the Assistant Registrary in the School Office.

The appointment will be equivalent to Administrative Officer, Grade II, for which the pensionable scale of stipends is £18,915 to £24,479 a year. Applicants should have at least three years of administrative experience, preferably in a university or medical environment, working knowledge of ACCESS database management, supervisory experience, and degree-level education, or equivalent experience.

Research Assistant in the School of Education and Homerton College

A Research Assistant is required for the equivalent of one day a week from 3 April 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter, until 31 March 2002, for a new project, entitled 'Pupils' identities and participation as learners: how pupils can help teachers improve the social conditions of learning', which forms part of the ESRC's Teaching and Learning Network, co-ordinated at Homerton College. It is hoped that applicants will be nearing completion, or in possession, of a Ph.D. Degree in social sciences.

In addition to knowledge and experience of qualitative research methods in education, successful applicants will need to demonstrate the ability to carry out classroom observations and lead pupil discussion groups in primary and secondary schools. Applicants will require the ability to write clearly, to work collaboratively as a member of the project team, and with colleagues in the wider Network, and to manage their own time and meet deadlines. The salary for this part-time (20 per cent) post will be on the Research Assistant scale, currently £16,286-£18,185 a year, pro rata. The closing date for applications is 10 March 2000 and interviews will be held on 30 March 2000.
