Historical Tripos, Part I

At the request of the Faculty Board of History, the General Board have approved amendments of the regulations and supplementary regulations for Paper 22 of Part I of the Historical Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 293), as set out below. These amendments take immediate effect, and apply to the examination to be held in 2001. The Faculty Board have given an assurance that no candidate's preparation for the examination is adversely affected by these changes. The regulations have been amended as follows:

Regulation 13.

Section F

Extra-European History

By amending the title and period of Paper 22 so as to read:

Paper 22.  North American history from 1607 to 1877.

The supplementary regulations for Part I of the Historical Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 297) have been amended as follows:

By amending the supplementary regulation for Paper 22 so as to read:

Paper 22. North American History from 1607 to 1877

This paper will concentrate on the history of those parts of North America which now form the United States. Candidates will be required to answer three questions.

The Faculty Board of History give notice that they have amended their announcement of subjects for Part I of the Historical Tripos, 2001 (Reporter, 1998-99, p. 691) as follows. The Faculty Board is satisfied that no candidate's preparation will be adversely affected by this amendment. The subject and supplementary regulations for Paper 24 will be:

Paper 24. The history of the United States from 1828

Paper 24. A subject in any aspect of history specified by the Faculty Board from time to time

This paper will, until further notice, be a paper entitled 'The history of the United States from 1828'. The paper will concentrate on the history of those parts of North America which now form the United States. Candidates will be required to answer three questions.

The Faculty Board of History also give notice of the following restriction to candidates answering both Papers 22 and 24 in the examination to be held in 2001:

Whilst candidates would be able to offer both Papers 22 and 24 for Part I, the Board have agreed that those who offered this pair of chronologically overlapping papers would be debarred from answering questions in the period common to both papers in the chronologically earlier paper, i.e. 'starred' questions on Paper 22.
