University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Applications are invited from candidates with a significant record of research achievement in Bioceramics or a related field. The appointee will work in Professor William Bonfield's newly-established group in the University to develop teaching and research in Biomedical Materials.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Law

Amendment of vacancy for University Lecturer in the Faculty of Law (Reporter, p. 62).

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in International Law, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000 or as agreed. The person appointed will be expected to teach in the area of International Law at undergraduate and postgraduate level, supervise research students, conduct research in one or more areas of International Law, and play a part in the general work of the Faculty. The person appointed will also be expected to play a part in the work of the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law.

Assistant Registrary in the University Offices (General Board Division)

Assistant Registrary, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The person appointed will undertake the duties of the Departmental Administrator in the Department of Zoology. Candidates should be educated to degree level or equivalent, and have substantial administrative experience, preferably in a university or research institution. The appointment will be made for an initial period of three years, unless this requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Registrary is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Law

Applications are invited for the Clifford Chance Lectureship, to take up appointment from 1 April 2000 or as may be agreed. The post is funded by Clifford Chance. The person appointed will be expected to take charge of the administration of the double Maîtrise and the Erasmus and Socrates student exchange schemes. In addition, the person appointed will be expected to teach either French Law, the Law of the European Union, or Comparative Law in general. The successful candidate will also be expected to conduct research and to play a part in the general work of the Faculty. The scale of stipends is £17,238-£22,579 a year.

Administrative Officer / Departmental Secretary in the Department of Biochemistry

Applications are invited for a new Administrative post in the Department of Biochemistry. The need for this post is a direct consequence of the Department's research success, which has resulted in a substantial growth in research activity, income, and expenditure, and the associated resource needs.

The Department has grown to over 450 staff in total, and this new post, together with the Principal Assistant/Technician, will provide vital senior administrative and technical support to the Departmental Superintendent. This senior team will be responsible for the provision of day to day supervision of 70 support staff, the management of the financial and research grant information and processes, and the allocation and co-ordination of all the resources and facilities for the research and teaching support needs in the Department. The successful applicant for this post would have specific responsibility for the accounts, stores, reception, secretarial support, and catering/conference facilities and staff. Other key elements of the role are to service a number of departmental teaching, research, and finance committees and work groups, and to organize and lead various refurbishment and administrative projects.

To be successful in this post, a proven track record as a good manager of people is essential. Knowledge of both the University committee administration, and financial processes and systems would be ideal. Energy, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a sense of humour, are prerequisites. Funds are available for this post for three years in the first instance, to be paid on the pensionable scale for an Administrative Officer, Grade II/Departmental Secretary, Grade C, in the range £18,915 to £24,479 a year. The Department operates a no smoking policy.

Departmental Administrator in the Department of Geography

Departmental Administrator in the Department of Geography, to take up appointment from 1 February 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Administrator is responsible to the Head of the Department for many aspects of management and administration, including supervision of assistant staff, of finance, of grants from outside bodies, of departmental facilities, and of arrangements for teaching and research. The post carries certain additional responsibilities in relation to the Scott Polar Research Institute and the Faculty Board of Earth Sciences and Geography. Previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post, preferably in a higher education establishment with a research grant portfolio, and proven ability in managing resources and staff are essential qualifications. Prospective candidates for this office should normally be educated to degree level.

Appointment will be for an initial period of three years, and renewable for a further two years. At the end of this five-year period, the nature of the post will be reviewed. The salary is in the range £22,579 to £27,451 a year.

Faculty Language Teaching Associate in the Faculty of Classics

The principal responsibilities of this new post will be to assist in the delivery of language teaching in the Faculty, with a specific initial responsibility for Latin. The post-holder will assist in teaching language courses for undergraduates without A level Latin, as well as in the teaching of first-year Greek and Latin language, and language courses for graduate students. Depending on experience, the post-holder will also have the opportunity to be involved in the development of future strategies for language teaching in the light of changing needs in the Faculty.

The salary offered will be on the scale £13,507-£16,286 a year. The post will run from 1 October 2000 to 30 September 2002 in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for one year. Job-shares and other flexible working arrangements will be considered.

Postgraduate Research Assistant in the Department of Engineering

A position exists for a Postgraduate Research Assistant to work on Engineering Design for Sustainable Development. The project is jointly funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the University of Cambridge Engineering Department, and will involve collaboration with Professor Peter Guthrie, Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Sustainable Development. The person appointed will convert industrial experience of sustainability issues into accessible material for teaching. He or she will also develop strategies and approaches to sustainable development drawn from case studies. The successful candidate will have a degree in a relevant subject, which might be Geography, Biology, Physics, Engineering, or a similar subject.

The appointment will be for thirty-three months, starting on 1 January 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary is in the range £16,286 to £18,185 a year.
