Computer Officer, Grade II, in the University Computing Service

A post is offered in development and support of central information systems (World Wide Web and Usenet News). Specific expertise in Web and News services (including cache technology) is needed, together with a thorough understanding of Unix, both as a user and as a system administrator. This is not a web authoring job, but some understanding of that field is also necessary. Appointment and reappointment will be for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade II, is £23,521 a year, rising by five annual increments to £27,451.

Research appointments in the Institute of Astronomy

Theoretical Astronomy. Applications are invited for postdoctoral positions from candidates in any branch of Theoretical Astronomy. The Institute currently has strong programmes in: local star formation, accretion discs, stellar evolution, stellar pulsations, stellar dynamics and galaxy structure, high energy and relativistic astrophysics, AGN, high-redshift star formation, galaxy formation and the IGM, large-scale structure, cosmology.

The appointment will be for a maximum of three years, with a preferred starting date of 1 October 2000. The salary scale is £17,238 (age twenty-six) to £24,479 (age thirty-four and over), plus USS benefits.

Applications including a curriculum vitae, a publications list, and a statement of research interests should be sent to Dr J. E. Research Associate in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate, to work on transonic helicopter noise. The project is funded by EPSRC and will involve collaboration with GKN Westland Ltd and Thomson-Marconi Sonar Ltd. The project will exploit computational fluid dynamics and novel extensions of the Lighthill acoustic analogy to understand and predict the sound generated by high-speed helicopter rotors. The successful Research Associate will have, or expect to have, a Ph.D. Degree in computational fluid dynamics; experience of high-resolution shock capturing techniques, e.g. TVD would be a particular advantage. The appointment will be for three years, starting on 1 January 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary for a Research Associate is up to a maximum of £24,479 a year.

Research Assistant in the University Library

Applications are invited for the part-time post (17.5 hours a week) of Research Assistant in the Official Publications Department of the University Library (BOPCRIS: British Official Publications Collaborative Reader Information Service for Key Nineteenth- and Twentieth-century Documents). Applicants should have a good honours degree, and preferably a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies, together with experience in an academic environment.

The salary is in the range of £17,238 to £18,185 a year (pro rata).
