Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the School of Education

University Lecturer in Geography Education, to take up appointment on 1 May 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience, both in geography teaching and in educational research. The post-holder will take a major responsibility for preparing secondary geography teachers within the Faculty's P.G.C.E. partnership with schools, and will contribute to continuing professional development and higher degree work in the field. It is expected that he or she will take a leading role in developing geography education at national and international level.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Chemistry

Three University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Chemistry. The posts are available from 1 October 2000. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong research background in any branch of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or biological chemistry.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Judge Institute of Management Studies

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in International Management, to take up appointment from 1 September 2000. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in international management processes or cross-cultural management. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, and the ability to teach either or both of the above and related subjects on the Institute's undergraduate, M.B.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes. Candidates will be expected to provide evidence of teaching performance in the form of teaching evaluations.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Marketing, to take up appointment from 1 September 2000. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence in research, and the ability to teach marketing on the Institute's undergraduate, M.B.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in business-to-business or high tech marketing, international marketing, or marketing strategy. Candidates will be expected to provide evidence of teaching performance in the form of teaching evaluations.

University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Geography

University Assistant Lecturer in Human Geography, from 1 October 2000. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the Department's high level of research activity, and to teach at undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. levels.

OTHER POSTS

Lecturers or Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Chemistry

Three unestablished Lecturers or Assistant Lecturers in Molecular Informatics, based in the new Unilever Centre for Molecular Sciences Informatics. Funding for the posts is available for five years in the first instance and the posts may, subject to the availability of future funding, be renewed for a further period or periods. The appointments will establish new research areas and teaching in the Centre, and will cover the breadth of computation in the molecular sciences. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with a strong research background in one or more of the following: database applications, knowledge management, new methods development, and internet applications development.

Appointments will be made at the Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed. Appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years, subject to satisfactory performance.

The age-related scale of stipend will be as follows:

Lecturer: £20,811, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Assistant Lecturer: £17,238, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Constables

Applications for the part-time posts of University Constables are invited from staff members of the University and/or Colleges, who wish to become more involved in the traditional functions of the University. The post is for twelve months and Constables, once in office, are normally reselected each year until retirement. Applicants should be smart in appearance and medically fit. They should have a mature outlook, and a sensible attitude to the younger generation. Post-holders will be required to work ten Saturdays a year, and be available at odd times throughout the year to attend VIP and ceremonial duties at Honorary Degrees and General Admissions (29, 30 June, and 1 July 2000). They may be required to take a first aid course, at the University's expense. Applicants should obtain the permission of their Heads of Department or Colleges, to be available for duties as a Constable.
