University offices: Vacancies

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Engineering

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Information Engineering, to take up appointment from 1 October 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment is in the general area of information engineering. The Information Engineering Division of the Department of Engineering has groups in Control, Signal Processing, Computer Speech and Vision, and Communications. Applications from candidates in the fields of multimedia engineering or control engineering are especially welcome. The successful candidate will have, or will be expected to develop, a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international standing and 5* research rating. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to undergraduate courses, and supervising final year undergraduates and graduate students. Appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age of the person appointed, and will be, for a University Lecturer, for three or five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends, which are under review, are:

University Lecturer: £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,655 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,815.

Senior Advisory Officer in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service)

Senior Advisory Officer (Minor Works Procurement) in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service), to take up appointment from 1 August 1999. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director responsible for maintenance and minor works, the successful applicant will be required to manage a multi-disciplinary design and procurement group and be responsible for delivering a wide range of projects of up to £1m project cost. Sound quality and financial control and contract management are important functions of the job, and applicants must also have at least ten years' postgraduate experience in a buildings-related environment. They should be fully conversant with all aspects of building design, operation, and procurement, preferably in a research-based environment. The successful applicant will be deputy to the Assistant Director. Applicants should be professionally qualified in building surveying, architecture, quantity surveying, structural engineering, or a related discipline. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Advisory Officer is £27,515 a year, rising by three annual increments to £31,010 (under review).
