Report of the Council on the days of General Admission to Degrees: Notice

26 April 1999

The Council have considered the remarks made by Mr Milner and Dr Horton at the Discussion of this Report on 16 March 1999 (Reporter, p. 517). The Council are grateful for the support which both speakers gave to the proposals contained in the Report.

Both speakers commented on the arrangements for admitting members of the University and the guests of graduands to Congregations. The Council regret the need for the issue of tickets for admission to the Senate-House, but they have judged this measure to be necessary on grounds of health and safety. The arrangements introduced in January 1999 for the issue of tickets to the guests of graduands are still at an experimental stage. The Council accept Dr Horton's suggestion that it would be helpful to publish a Notice setting out the new arrangements, and they intend to do this as soon as the arrangements are stabilized. The Council wish to assure the University that at ordinary Congregations of the Regent House (including the Congregations for General Admission) space will continue to be reserved in the Senate-House for members of the Regent House, and also for any members of the Senate who may wish to attend; such persons will not require admission tickets (except at Congregations for the conferment of Honorary Degrees, when admission is by ticket only, and on other special occasions, of which due notice will be given).

The Council are submitting a Grace to the Regent House (Grace 8, p. 547) for the approval of the recommendations of their Report.
