Graces to be submitted to the Regent House at a Congregation on 20 February 1999

The Council have sanctioned the submission of the following Graces to the Regent House at a Congregation to be held on 20 February 1999:1

1. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Divinity honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon the Most Reverend DESMOND MPILO TUTU, Emeritus Archbishop of Cape Town, and lately Robert W. Woodruff Visiting Professor of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta.

2. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Law honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon LI KA-SHING, C.B.E., Chairman of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd, and of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.

3. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Law honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon SADAKO OGATA, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

4. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon the Hon. MIRIAM LOUISA ROTHSCHILD, C.B.E., F.R.S., research scientist.

5. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon CéSAR MILSTEIN, C.H., Ph.D., F.R.S., Emeritus Fellow of Darwin College, Honorary Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, formerly Head of the Division of Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge.

6. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon GORDON MOORE, co-founder of Intel Corporation.

7. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon ANTONIA SUSAN BYATT, C.B.E., B.A., F.R.S.L., of Newnham College, writer.

8. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon JüRGEN HABERMAS, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Philosophy in the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main.

9. That the title of the Degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa be conferred under Statute B, IV upon SIR COLIN ALEXANDER ST JOHN WILSON, M.A., R.A., F.R.I.B.A., F.R.S.A, Emeritus Professor of Architecture, Emeritus Fellow of Pembroke College, Honorary Fellow of Corpus Christi and Churchill Colleges.

1 It is expected that these Honorary Degrees will be conferred at the Congregation to be held on Tuesday, 29 June 1999 (see the Vice-Chancellor's Notice, p. 298).
