Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer in the Institute of Astronomy

University Lecturer in the Institute of Astronomy to take up appointment on 1 October 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates are sought with experience in any area of observational astronomy. The Institute's current activities include work in cosmology and large scale structure of the Universe, the formation, structure, and evolution of galaxies, quasars, high energy astrophyics, stellar dynamics, star formation and evolution, accretion discs, helio- and asteroseismology, gravitational lensing, and the measurement of stellar radial velocities. The Institute also has a vibrant programme of instrument development for large optical and IR telescopes. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to these and other research programmes and interact with the other members of the Institute as well as astronomers in other related Departments in the University. The appointee would also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of the Institute. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment until the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.

University Lecturer in the School of Education

University Lecturer in the School of Education (Mathematics Education - Secondary) to take up appointment on 1 September 1999, or as soon as possible thereafter. This appointment will enhance the School's existing strengths in mathematics education, and candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience both in mathematics teaching and in educational research. The postholder will take a major responsibility for preparing secondary mathematics teachers within the Faculty's P.G.C.E. partnership with schools and will contribute to continuing professional development and higher degree work in the field. Candidates should possess good academic and professional qualifications and be able to demonstrate their commitment to excellence both as University Lecturers and as educational researchers. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Computer Laboratory to take up appointment on 1 January 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should have research interests in the general area of software systems, especially work which would complement or extend the Laboratory's current software research. An outstanding applicant in any research area will be considered. The person appointed will be expected to teach central subjects in Computer Science in addition to their own specialities. Current research activities of the Computer Laboratory can be found on the world-wide web at http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/. The appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

University Assistant Lecturer: £16,655 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,815.

Two University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Social Anthropology

Two University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Social Anthropology to take up appointment from 1 October 1999, or on a date to be arranged. Applicants for these posts will normally be expected to have doctorates or significant publications in the field. Applications will be welcome from candidates in any field of social anthropology and with specialist expertise in any ethnographic area. The appointments will be for three years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable stipend for a University Assistant Lecturer is £16,655 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,815.

Assistant Registrary in the University Offices (General Board Division)

Assistant Registrary, to be seconded to the School of Clinical Medicine (Resources Division), to take up appointment from mid-January 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. The principal role of the Assistant Registrary will be to oversee the School's diverse resources and to assist in developing and implementing the School's resource policy. All aspects involve close working with the NHS. Candidates should have appropriate administrative experience, preferably within a university or research institute, and be educated to at least degree level. The appointment will be made for an initial period of three years, unless this requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Registrary is £20,107 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £31,010.

Administrative Officer in the University Offices (General Board Division)

Administrative Officer, Grade II, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The initial duties of the post are the provision of administrative support in the Department of Plant Sciences. Candidates should be educated to degree level, or equivalent, and have relevant administrative experience. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods of five years at a time or, where appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is £18,275 a year, rising by six annual increments to £23,651.
