Music Tripos, 1999: Notice

The Faculty Board of Music give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 1999, the form of the examinations for Part IA, Part IB, and Part II of the Music Tripos will be changed, as follows:

Part Ia

Practical examination

In the transposition test (keyboard tests) the interval of transposition (not more than one tone up or down) will be specified in the paper.

Part Ib

Practical examination

In the figured bass test (keyboard tests) the melody line (solo instrument or voice) will be printed above the basso continuo line, and will be played by an Examiner.

Part II

Paper 7.  Perception and performance

This paper will consist of two elements, (i) the submission of an essay and (ii) a written paper of three hours' duration.

(i) The essay should be between 2,000 and 4,000 words in length, excluding bibliography and appendices, but including footnotes, and should report the results of the candidate's conduct of an experimental study of musical behaviour.
(ii) Questions will be set on the following topics: general issues in the experimental study of musical behaviour; aspects of experimental design; theories of musical behaviour and cognition; evaluation of primary literature; scientific and critical approaches to music. Candidates will be required to answer two questions.
