Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos and Preliminary Examination for the Linguistics Tripos, 1999: Notice

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 1999, the form of the examinations for certain papers of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos and of the Preliminary Examination for the Linguistics Tripos will be changed, as follows:

Classical Greek and Latin

Paper GL 12.  Passages for translation from Greek and Latin authors

In this paper candidates offering Greek, if they took Option B for Greek in Part IA, and all candidates offering Latin will be required to include at least one passage marked with an asterisk among the passages translated.

Paper GL 13.  Greek literature

Candidates who took Option B for Greek in Part IA will be required to answer at least one question marked with an asterisk.

Paper GL 14.  Latin Literature

All candidates will be required to answer at least one question marked with an asterisk.

German

Paper Ge. 11 (New Regulations).  The history of the German language
Paper 47 (Old Regulations).  The history of the German language

For candidates taking this paper in Part IB the form of the paper will be as in 1998. Candidates taking this paper in Part II will be required to translate only three out of the four passages set in Question 1.

Linguistics

Paper Li. 2.  Introduction to language history and use (also serves as Paper 2 of the Preliminary Examination for the Linguistics Tripos)

This paper will be divided into two sections. Section A will contain questions on historical linguistics and sociolinguistics. Section B will contain questions on psycholinguistics and discourse analysis. In each case questions on the history of these sub-disciplines may be set. Candidates will be required to answer three questions, including at least one from each section.

Portuguese

Paper Pg. 2.  Introduction to Lusophone literature

For candidates taking this paper in Part IA the form of the paper will be as in 1998. Candidates taking this paper in Part IB will be required to answer three questions chosen from at least two sections.

Spanish

Paper Sp.3.  Topics in Spanish Golden Age culture

Topic (ii), 'Sacred and profane love', has been retitled 'Sexual and spiritual love'. This is a change of title only; there is no change in the subject matter of the topic.
