University offices: Vacancies

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer in the Department of Plant Sciences

University Lecturer in the Department of Plant Sciences to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates in any area of plant ecology are encouraged to apply but the Department is particularly interested in those active in mathematical modelling of ecosystems or plant communities, molecular plant ecology, or relevant aspects of plant-microbe interactions. The Department is one of the few remaining University Departments in the UK dedicated solely to the study of plants and fungi, and its interests span all levels from the ecological to the molecular. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends (currently under review) for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.

Further information about the duties and conditions of appointment and an application form may be obtained from our Appointments webpage (http://www.bio.cam.ac.uk/sbs/appointments/) or the Secretary of the Appointments Committee for the Faculty of Biology, 19 Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1QA (e-mail appbiol@mole.bio.cam.ac.uk, fax 01223 332355), to whom applications (two copies) including a curriculum vitae, list of publications, a brief statement of research aims, and the names of not more than three referees, should be sent so as to reach him not later than 17 July 1998.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Engineering

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Engineering to take up appointment from a date to be determined. The person appointed will be expected to take part in the general teaching of the four-year course leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees. Preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates with an active research record in the field of Microwave Communications. The person appointed will be expected to develop a significant research activity in microwave communications systems, particularly in relation to the design and analysis of new and existing systems, and to contribute strongly to teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. The appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age of the person appointed, and will be for three years or five years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment after three years for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends (currently under review) are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.
