University offices: Vacancies

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer in the Faculty of English

University Lecturer in the Faculty of English in English Literary History to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a new post which has been created as a result of a benefaction from the late Samuel Gorley Putt to fund a lectureship in English Literary History. Applications are welcome from specialists in any area of English Literature. The appointment will be for three years with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875. There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of German

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of German in German Linguistics and Philology to take up appointment on 1 October 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate should be capable of teaching for the paper on the History of the German Language in Part II of the Tripos and for a new paper in Part I on the structure and varieties of the contemporary language, and will be expected to take an active interest in the Department's language-teaching programme. An ability to teach Gothic may be an advantage.

 The appointment will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age and experience of the person appointed, and will be for three years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science in the field of the History of Modern Science, with special reference to the field of Biomedicine in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, to take up appointment on 1 October 1998, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

 The pensionable scale of stipends is £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.

Technical Officer in the Department of Physics

Technical Officer in the Department of Physics in Semiconductor Processing to take up appointment on 1 February 1998 or as soon as possible thereafter. The person appointed will take day-to-day responsibility of managing and maintaining equipment in a semiconductor process-laboratory clean-room. He or she will have considerable previous experience in the processing and characterization of III-V semiconductor materials and devices. The appointee will be responsible for training and assisting research students in fabricating semiconductor devices. The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

 The pensionable scale of stipends for a Technical Officer is £16,927 a year, rising by five annual increments to £21,016.
