Department of Physics

PRINCIPAL TECHNICIAN

Applications are invited for the post of Principal Technician, which is the most senior technician assistant post in the Department through which over 100 other technical and general assistants report. The Principal Technician is responsible for the maintenance of the smooth running of all facilities (including some equipment matters) in the Department on a day to day basis. The Principal Technician also provides assistance on certain personnel matters, acts as liaison for issues regarding the fabric of the building, and is responsible for the security of the Department. Various safety duties are also involved, as is the supervision of some senior assistants.

 Candidates should have qualifications to HNC level or equivalent in a technical discipline carried out in a physical sciences laboratory and some working experience in it. The following are also essential: supervisory ability and experience, the ability to deal effectively with a wide range of people, organizational ability, computer literacy, and some knowledge of building services, practices, procedures, and regulations. Previous employment in the University is preferred. The Department operates a non-smoking policy.

 Salary will be in the range £21,519-£22,841 a year.
