Newnham College

RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS

The College intends to award at least two research studentships to provide all approved fees and maintenance equivalent to a state studentship; the Mary Anne Ewart Studentship, with preference for the Sciences, and the Royalton-Kisch Studentship, for certain areas of theology, anthropology, and sociology. Candidates must become members of Newnham and have listed it as their College of first preference, must be admitted by the Board of Graduate Studies with the intention of studying for a Ph.D. Degree, and must be of UK or EC status. The awards will normally be renewed for a further two years, subject to satisfactory performance, and may be reduced to the extent that the student receives support from elsewhere. Further particulars may be obtained from the Tutor for Graduate Students, to whom applications must be returned by 1 April 1998. (Prospective candidates are advised to have applied to the Board of Graduate Studies by 31 January.)

PELHAM ROBERTS BURSARY

The College intends to award a Pelham Roberts Bursary, with a maximum value of £4,000, tenable for 1998-99, to a student undertaking research into archaeology, the natural sciences, or medicine. Candidates must have been admitted by the Board of Graduate Studies with the intention of studying for the degree of Ph.D., and must have listed Newnham as their College of first preference. The award may be reduced to the extent that the student receives support from elsewhere. Further particulars may be obtained from the Tutor for Graduate Students, to whom applications must be returned by 1 April 1998.

ENTRANCE RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS

The College intends to award Entrance Research Studentships of up to £500 in any subject, tenable for 1998-99. Students who are applying to the Board of Graduate Studies for admission to the degree of Ph.D., M.Litt., M.Sc., or M.Phil. and who name Newnham College as their College of first preference will be considered eligible for the Studentships. A separate application to the College is not required; the Board of Graduate Studies form and accompanying letters from referees, of which copies automatically reach the College from the Board, will be sufficient. The awards are intended for candidates who have graduated, or are likely to graduate, with first-class honours or the equivalent. In exceptional circumstances, a successful candidate may have the value of the Studentship augmented to a limited extent. An application form for augmentation may be obtained from the Graduate Tutor at Newnham.

A further three studentships, worth £500, are available to Newnham students in their second or third year of research, who will be required to submit written work in support of their application at the end of the Lent Term of the preceding academical year. These awards may again exceptionally be augmented to a limited extent.

GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

Graduate Scholarships of £100 each, tenable for one year, will be awarded to members of the College who have obtained first-class honours (or, in special circumstances, class II.1) in their final examination, who intend to remain at Newnham College in October 1997 and who are accepted by the Board of Graduate Studies for the degree of Ph.D., M.Litt., M.Sc., or M.Phil. No application form is necessary but students should let their Director of Studies know their intentions.

Any Student who does not start postgraduate work immediately but who wishes to return to Newnham to do so in a later year and would like to be considered for a Scholarship, should write to her Director of Studies not later than the 31 March preceding the academical year in which she intends to start her course. A Graduate Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with an Entrance Research Studentship.
