NIHR IAT Clinical Lecturer in Primary Care Research in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, General Practice and Primary Care Research Unit

The Department of Public Health and Primary Care is looking for a General Practitioner with a relevant M.D. or Ph.D. who is enthusiastic to develop her/his academic career and work towards a senior clinical academic Fellowship, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post offers fully qualified GPs with a Ph.D. or M.D. an opportunity to carry out postdoctoral research half-time and apply for further Fellowship funding. The post-holder will combine their academic training (50%) with their clinical service (50%), as a salaried or self-employed GP, and will hold an honorary contract locally.

The successful candidate will work closely with Jonathan Mant, the new Professor of Primary Care Research. The Department will therefore give preference to applicants with a commitment to contribute to building a research programme focusing on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease (particularly stroke) in primary care settings.

The appointee should also have an interest in teaching and will be expected to contribute to the Department's teaching programme for students of the University and for National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) academic clinical Fellows.

The post is placed in the General Practice and Primary Care Research Unit. Espousing a multidisciplinary approach, the Unit is one of the UK's strongest research groupings in primary care and behavioural science. It is one of only five departments of general practice in the UK awarded a 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and is a founder member of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research.

The post is available for up to four years. The salary will be on the GP Consultant salary scale in the range of £60,944 to £79,001.

University Lecturer in Advanced Structures in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lectureship in Advanced Structures. It is expected that the successful candidate will take up the appointment on 1 January 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The range of topics in which the applicant might specialize includes: (a) high performance structures, which includes those in aerospace applications; smart materials and structural health monitoring; morphing structures; active aeroelastics for control; lightweight structures for high performance vehicles; (b) structural mechanics of biological structures; (c) energy structures, e.g. large renewable energy structures; structural aspects of new generation fission and also fusion nuclear power plants; and (d) complex soil-structure interactions within civil and offshore engineering applications.

The successful candidate will have or be expected to develop a record of world class research commensurate with the Department's international reputation and top-rank research rating. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to undergraduate courses, supervising final-year projects, and supervising graduate students.

The appointment will be for a probationary period of five years and, subject to satisfactory performance, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter. The current pensionable scale of stipends is in the range of £34,793 to £44,074 a year (pay award pending).

Clinical Farm Animal Veterinarian in the Department of Veterinary Medicine

The Department of Veterinary Medicine require an experienced Veterinary Surgeon to join the senior clinician (DCHP and DECBHM holder) and resident of the farm animal team of the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital in this senior clinical post. The person appointed will be a key player in the provision of clinical services to the sheep and cattle clients of the first opinion practice, and contribute to the work of the referral centre for farm animals. Participation in the practical instruction of veterinary students, the training of the resident, and the out-of-hours rota will form part of the position. The successful applicant will benefit from the wide-ranging facilities within the Department, including a strong team of support staff.

Veterinary Neurologist in the Department of Veterinary Medicine

A veterinary neurologist who has attained the Diploma of the ECVN or ACVIM (Neurology) is required to aid in provision of Clinical Neurology services and undergraduate teaching in the Department.
