University Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with reappointment thereafter subject to satisfactory performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £23,296 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £35,950.

UNIVERSITY OFFICES

University Lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy

The Faculty of Philosophy wishes to appoint a University Lecturer with effect from 1 October 2003. Applicants should be committed to high quality teaching and research and must be prepared to teach topics in metaphysics (broadly construed) at all undergraduate levels as well as at graduate level.

University Lecturer in the Department of Slavonic Studies

Candidates will have either a record of research and publication in Slavonic linguistics and philology or clear evidence of potential publication in relevant fields. Candidates will be expected to teach an existing paper in the History of the Russian Language and a Comparative paper on the Slavonic Languages, to supervise, when appropriate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. Degree students, to participate fully in undergraduate teaching of the Russian language at all levels, and to play an active role in the further development of the curriculum. The appointment will be from 1 October 2003 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Administrative Officer, Grade I, in the Academic Division of the University Offices

Administrative Officer, Grade I, in the Academic Division of the University Offices, to serve as Administrator of the Department of Plant Sciences, to take up appointment as soon as possible.

Candidates should be educated to degree level and have previous relevant experience in an administrative post, with proven ability in managing resources and staff, preferably gained in a higher education establishment.

Appointment will be to the retiring age subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, is £25,451 to £30,660 a year.

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the University Computing Service

The Computer Officer, Grade II (IT Training and Support Officer) will be working in the Technical User Support Division which provides support for research and teaching. The post-holder will assist with the organization and delivery of the Service's extensive training programme, providing both lecture-style courses and practical-based training sessions, and will also be expected to assist in giving technical support to members of the University through the Service's Help Desk. The post-holder will be responsible for maintaining and contributing to the Computing Service's online support facilities. In addition the post-holder should have broad experience of Information Technology, should be an excellent IT trainer, should be a good organizer, and will possess good interpersonal skills.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade II, is £28,498 to £30,660 a year. Appointment to this office shall be to the retiring age, subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period.

Departmental Secretary, Grade B, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Departmental Secretary, Grade B, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Secretary is responsible to the Head of Department for all aspects of the administration of this leading, research-intensive Department (annual expenditure £8m), and also acts as Secretary of the Mathematics Faculty Board. Candidates should be educated at least to degree level. Previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post is essential, preferably within the HE sector. Applicants should be articulate, able to work on their own initiative, have good time management skills, and have an enthusiastic and flexible approach to their work. Excellent communication and IT skills are essential.

Lector in the Faculty of Oriental Studies

Applications are invited for the office of Lector in Chinese in the Faculty of Oriental Studies, to take up appointment on 1 October 2003.

The holder of the office will be expected to teach Chinese language courses, both undergraduate and postgraduate, at all levels. Applications are invited from candidates with a good first degree and experience of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in a university. A good command of written and spoken English is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in computer assisted language teaching and with training in foreign language education; knowledge of syllabus design and material development would be a plus. The appointment will be for one year in the first instance with a possibility of reappointment for one year at a time to a maximum of five years. The salary scale is £15,129, rising by three annual increments to £18,265.

Temporary Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Divinity

The Faculty of Divinity seeks to fill a temporary post in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics to cover maternity leave from 1 October 2003 to 30 June 2004. The salary will be in the range of £21,125 to £25,451 a year, pro rata.

Team Leader in the Cataloguing Division of the University Library

The University Library is seeking a suitably qualified candidate for the temporary post of Team Leader - English-Language Cataloguing in the Cataloguing Division in the University Library. Applicants should have excellent IT, staff management, organizational, and communication skills, along with familiarity with AACR2, LCSH, and MARC 21. A good honours degree and a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies are essential.

Salary is in the range of £21,125 to £27,339 a year. This post is available from 1 May 2003 to 30 April 2004. Project Manager in the Telecommunications Office

The University is currently initiating a project to replace its existing 13,000-line telephone system and wishes to appoint an in-house Project Manager. Based in the University's Telecommunications Office the successful candidate would manage the project, providing co-ordination and control between the University, the project consultants, and the successful solution provider.

The post-holder must be able to show that he/she has successfully managed the installation and commissioning of a telecommunication system of this magnitude. The post-holder will also have a background in telephony/IT, as well as being fully conversant with the convergent technologies of voice, data, and other media.
