MARGARET OGILVIE'S PROFESSORSHIP OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

Applications are invited for the above post, tenable from 1 October 2003, or such later date as may be arranged. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally renowned research programme in ophthalmology and to offer a clinical subspecialty of ophthalmology at tertiary/regional/supra-regional level. The potential areas of interest could include transplantation immunology/stem-cell research; angiogenesis; molecular genetics and gene therapy; biomaterials and bioengineering; and epidemiology. This list does not, however, exclude those with other interests such as major clinical problems in eye disease, the biology of retinal disease and repair, and neuro-ophthalmology. The Professor must be medically qualified and an honorary NHS consultant contract will be negotiated with the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust.

A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Linacre College is attached to the Professorship.

HEAD OF THE LIFE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES DIVISION

The University of Oxford seeks to appoint a new Head of the Life and Environmental Sciences Division from 1 October 2003, following the retirement of Professor Peter Newell. This is a full-time senior management position within the University, with responsibility for academic and administrative leadership in a highly diverse academic division with considerable scope for interdisciplinary development.

The Life and Environmental Sciences Division consists of both high-quality Experimental Science Departments and high-quality Departments whose ethos is based more in the Social Sciences and the Humanities. All are vigorous in teaching and research, and the diverse disciplines are linked by strong thematic concerns such as ecology, evolution, and culture. The successful candidate will have academic standing of the highest order in an area relevant to the work of the division. Additionally, he or she will combine excellent administrative skills and a flair for leadership.
