Philosophical Society

On Monday, 18 November 2002, at 8.30 p.m., in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site, Dr D. Arnone, of TeraView Ltd, will deliver a lecture entitled Generation of terahertz waves and potential applications in biomedical imaging. All who are interested are invited.

At a meeting held on 5 November 2002 in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, Professor T. M. Cox, President, was in the Chair.

Sixty-seven Fellows were elected and two were re-elected. During 2002 a total of 204 Fellows have been elected and eight have been re-elected.

Professor A. L. Greer, of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, delivered a lecture entitled Through a glass darkly - studies of amorphous solids. A vote of thanks was moved by Professor Alan Windle.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on Monday, 28 October 2002, in the Arts School, Bene't Street, at 4.30 p.m.

Professor T. M. Cox, President, was in the Chair.

1. The Treasurer presented the audited accounts for the period January to December 2001, which were adopted.

2. The following Officers and Members of Council were elected for the year 2003:

President-Elect: Professor H. Ahmed

Treasurer: Dr A. V. Edwards

Vice-Presidents: Professor K. Glover, Professor T. J. Pedley, Professor A. Howie

3. Twenty-four Fellows were elected. It was reported that since the last Annual General Meeting ten Fellows had died and one hundred and forty had resigned.

4. Messrs Peters Elworthy and Moore were appointed to act as Auditors for the year 2002.

ONE-DAY MEETING

A one-day meeting on Ionic channels and human disease will be held in the Pippard Lecture Theatre, Cavendish Laboratory, on Wednesday, 11 December 2002, starting at 9.15 a.m. This will be an interdisciplinary meeting open to all members of the University. The Speakers are Professor Denis Noble, Dr A. A. Grace, Dr C. L.-H. Huang, Professor N. Adadhani, Professor M. Zaidi, Professor H. C. Blair, Professor P. A. McNaughton, and Dr W. H. Colledge.

Admission is by ticket only. Tickets are available in advance from the Executive Secretary, Cambridge Philosophical Society, Bene't Street, Cambridge, CB2 3PY, or on the door. The first 120 Fellows of the Society to apply will be offered a free lunch.
