Examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree (one year course) 2003: Notice

The Development Studies Committee give notice that in the academical year 2002-03 the subjects for the examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) will be as follows:

Group 1

1. Development economics
This paper will be examined by means of a three-hour written paper.
2. Institutions and development
For candidates taking Paper 1 above, this paper will be examined by means of

either 2a a three-hour written paper
or 2b two essays of 5,000 words each.

For candidates not taking Paper 1 above, this paper will be examined by means of a three-hour written Paper 2a.
3. Sociology and politics of development
This paper will be examined by means of two essays of 5,000 words each.

Group 2

10. Quantitative methods in economics and finance (Subject 301 from the examination in Finance)
11. Topics in industrial and financial economics (Subject 410 from the examination in Economics)
13. Financial organization and economic growth (Subject 520 from the examination in Economics)
14. Philosophical issues in economics (Subject 650 from the examination in Economics)
15. The methodology of economics (Subject 660 from the examination in Economics)
16. National planning and economic policy (B05 and B06 from the examination in Land Economy Option B)
18. Social anthropology and development (Paper 3a from the examination in Social Anthropological Analysis)
20. Sociology and politics of Latin America (Paper 5 from the examination in Latin American Studies)
22. Globalization, big business, and developing countries (Paper MP13 from the examination in Management Studies)
23. Issues in public policy and regeneration (PGR02 and PGR06 from the examination in Land Economy Option B)
24. Development management
25. Population, politics, and culture

The Committee give notice that in the examination to be held in 2003 the papers of Group 2 will be examined as follows:

Paper 10 will be examined by means of a three-hour written paper and a project.
Paper 11 will be examined by means of one 4,000-word and two 2,000-word essays.
Paper 13 will be examined by means of two 4,000-word essays.
Paper 14 will be examined by means of four 2,000-word essays.
Papers 15, 20, 22, and 24 will each be examined by means of two 5,000-word essays.
Papers 16 and 23 will each be examined by means of a 4,000-word essay or project or a two-hour written paper at the beginning of Lent Term and a two-hour written paper in Easter Term.
Paper 18 will be examined by means of either a three-hour written paper (18a) or two 5,000-word essays (18b).
Paper 25 will be examined by means of either a three-hour written paper (25a) or two 5,000-word essays (25b).

The Development Studies Committee also give notice that options in Group 2 may be added to or removed from the above list by the Division of Michaelmas Term 2002. A further Notice will be issued if any such changes are made.
