PROFESSORSHIP OF COMPARATIVE LAW

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Professorship of Comparative Law with effect from 1 January 2003, or such later date as may be arranged.

The Professor will be expected to contribute to research and teaching in Comparative Law, building on and extending the Faculty of Law's high standing in this area of scholarship. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Brasenose College is attached to the Professorship.

PROFESSORSHIP OF CRIMINOLOGY

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Professorship of Criminology with effect from 1 October 2003, or such later date as may be arranged.

The person appointed will have an outstanding research and publication record; experience of directing empirical research; the ability to lead effectively a growing team of researchers; the ability to teach high-achieving students and to supervise doctoral students; and will possess an interest in theory and in policy. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at All Souls College is attached to the Professorship.

PROFESSORSHIP OF EDUCATIONAL STUDIES

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Professorship of Educational Studies with effect from 1 April 2003, or such later date as may be arranged, in succession to Professor R. Pring.

The new Professor will take over Professor Pring's role as Director of the Department of Educational Studies, for a period of at least the first five years following appointment. The person appointed will have an outstanding research and publication record in their chosen field of educational enquiry. It is expected that he or she will both benefit from Oxford's international renown as a base for their own research activities, as well as leading the Department as a whole in building on and furthering its commitment to carrying out research of international quality at 5* level.

Both as Professor and Director, the person appointed will be expected to play a leading role also in contributing to and overseeing the development of the Department's wide-ranging and highly successful post-graduate teaching, encompassing its highly rated Initial Teacher Education scheme, its part-time and full-time Diploma, Masters, and Doctoral provision, and its ESRC-recognized research training. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Green College is attached to the Professorship.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT IN THE FACULTY OF MODERN HISTORY

A research assistant is sought to work for Dr L. W. B. Brockliss, Magdalen College, on a prosopographical study of British naval surgeons, 1790-1815, funded by a grant by the University's Research Development Fund. The successful applicant must have, or be on the point of submitting, a doctorate in some aspect of the history of the British Isles in the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries (preferably in social and/or economic history), be computer literate, and have experience of setting up and handling databases. The appointment will be for six months from 1 October 2002. The salary will be on the scale of £17,626 a year. The appointee must be prepared to work extensively in London archives.
