The scholarships are intended to assist students of outstanding academic excellence who for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to study at the University of Oxford. They cover full board and accommodation in the College, College and University fees, and an additional grant of £4,000. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships will be tenable for three years.
Competition B is open to graduates of any university with a first class honours degree, who are ordinarily resident in the UK, and have not done more than two years of postgraduate study or research, and have been accepted to begin a course of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford in October 2002 in any subject normally acceptable for graduate study at the College, and have no other funding which would allow them to do so. The College intends to award one or two scholarships. Those interested in applying should contact the Secretary for Graduates, Merton College, Oxford, OX1 4JD (e-mail julieg@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk). Enquiries may be made at any time after 1 January 2002, but applications should be submitted no earlier than 16 August 2002. The closing date will be 2 September 2002.
