Graduate Officers in Research in the Centre of Latin-American Studies

The Committee of Management of the Centre of Latin-American Studies hopes soon to be in a position to appoint two Graduate Officers in Research tenable respectively from 1 October 2002 and 1 January 2003 for periods of three years, and invites applications.

The Centre is responsible for promoting within the University the study of Latin America and liaising with those who teach Latin-American subjects in the Faculties. The appointments will be open to candidates in all fields of the humanities and social sciences. The successful candidates will be expected to pursue an approved programme of research relating to one or more of the countries of Latin America, to make a limited contribution to the teaching of the M.Phil. in Latin-American Studies, and to assist the Director in the work of the Centre.

Those appointed will be expected either to have obtained a Ph.D. (or equivalent) Degree within the last five years, or to be on the point of submitting a doctoral dissertation by the time the appointment takes place. The purpose of these appointments is to facilitate completion of their professional training. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a substantial piece of written work as part of their application. The posts are on steps 6 to 8 of the general scale of stipends (£17,626 to £19,681 as at 1 March 2002).

Departmental Administrator in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (maternity leave cover)

The Department seeks a full-time administrator to provide cover in the Department during the maternity leave of the Administrator. The post-holder will spend 50% time managing the Cambridge e-Science Centre and the National Institute for Environmental e-Science and 50% time on a variety of other departmental duties.

Salary will be in the range of £21,503 to £26,491 a year. It is hoped that the successful applicant will be able to start on 1 July 2002 or shortly thereafter. The post has a limit of tenure of 19 July 2003 or the return of the post-holder from leave, whichever is earlier.

Temporary appointment attached to the Faculty of Economics and Politics

Applications are invited for a temporary appointment to cover the duties of Assistant Director of Development Studies attached to the Faculty of Economics and Politics. The main responsibilities for the post are teaching and administrative duties relating to the M.Phil. course in Development Studies for the Development Studies Committee. The successful candidate will also be responsible for teaching and administrative duties relating to the M.Phil. course in Economics with Development in the Faculty of Economics and Politics. Applications are welcome from candidates in any of the main research areas in the economics of developing countries. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary research, and a proven ability to teach economics in non-technical language to non-economists. The post will be tenable from 1 October 2002 for a fixed term of two years only. The pensionable scale of stipends for this post will be £22,522 to £34,734 a year.

Part-time Research Assistant

The editors of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Ben Jonson are seeking to appoint a part-time (30%) Research Assistant, funded by an award from the Arts and Humanities Research Board. The edition is being prepared under the General Editorship of Professors David Bevington (Chicago), Martin Butler (Leeds), and Ian Donaldson (Cambridge), and is scheduled for publication in print and electronic format in 2005. The Research Assistant will work fourteen hours a week either at Leeds University, with Professor Butler, or at Cambridge University, with Professor Donaldson (as may suit the convenience of the successful candidate). The work will include final checking and preparation of material for publication, some archival research, and close liaison with Cambridge University Press and the (thirty-plus) members of the international editorial team. Applicants should have experience of research in early modern literature or a cognate field. Salary will be in the range of £17,626 to £19,681 a year pro rata. The limit of tenure of this post will be 24 months.

Temporary Lectureship

Applications are invited for a temporary Lectureship in American Literature, tenable for one year from 1 October 2002. Preference may be given to those with interests in nineteenth-century literature. The salary will be determined. There is no application form. Temporary Lectureship in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages (Modern Greek)

The Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages intends to make a temporary appointment in Modern Greek language and literature, at the level of University Assistant Lecturer, for one year, from 1 January to 31 December 2003. Legal Adviser in the Research Services Division

The Research Services Division is seeking a talented lawyer to join its legal group. This group is responsible for copyright and for advising on intellectual property, including research collaborations for licensing technology to 'spin-outs' and established companies. Responsibilities will include providing advice on commercial matters within the Research Services Division and advice on other areas of law to the rest of the University administration.

The successful applicant would also be responsible for procurement and management of external legal advice where necessary. An ability to manage a complex workload is essential, as is the skill to communicate effectively with members of the University's academic and administrative staff at all levels. Experience in employment law would be an advantage. The salary will be dependent on experience.
