Cambridge University Assistants' Contributory Pension Scheme: Membership

The Managing Committee of the Cambridge University Assistants' Contributory Pension Scheme wish to appoint two further members to its Investments Committee. The Scheme is a defined benefit scheme set up for the benefit of employees of the University and associated bodies who are not members of USS. Its total invested assets amounted to £219.76m at 30 October 2001 and these are managed for it on a discretionary basis by three external firms.

The current membership of the Investments Committee is as follows:

Dr D. A. Blackadder, Former Bursar, Downing College, Chairman
Mrs J. M. Womack, University Treasurer
Mrs J. Rippeth, Director of Finance, UCLES Group
Mr E. Silk, Member Representative

Applicants, who should be members or employees of the University, should have at least ten years' experience of investment-related matters, be up to date with current investment issues, and have some knowledge of publicly traded securities.

Whilst the Scheme's investment managers are responsible for day-to-day investment matters it is essential that members of the Committee are able to contribute to discussions with those managers on long-term asset allocation strategies and to discuss their investment performance with them. The Committee has recently appointed two new managers, whose performance will be carefully monitored. The applicant should also be able to communicate his or her ideas easily with the other members of the Committee.

Membership of the Committee (which does not carry any remuneration) will require attendance at approximately three meetings a year with the Scheme's investment managers, which last approximately two hours, and potentially attendance at the occasional ad-hoc meeting. It is expected that appointments will be made for four years in the first instance, with a possibility of renewal for a further period of up to four years.

Applicants should send details of their relevant experience to Mrs S. E. Curryer, Head of Pensions Administration, Finance Division, 10 Peas Hill, Cambridge, CB2 3PN. The closing date is Friday, 4 January 2001.
