Posts in the Department of Pathology

University Lecturer (Honorary Consultant Status)

Applications are invited for the post of University Lecturer in Pathology. The successful applicant must be a medical graduate with substantial experience in clinical histopathology and in research, with proven capacity to attract external funding. He or she will be expected to develop a strong research programme, participate in undergraduate teaching, and contribute to the diagnostic histopathology service. Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists, or an equivalent postgraduate qualification, is required, and the appointed lecturer will be eligible for an honorary consultant contract with the Addenbrooke's NHS Trust. The orientation of the successful applicant's research, and the corresponding focus of histopathological specialization are not prescribed, but would be expected to contribute to and complement the existing broad spectrum of strengths in both research and service pathology at Cambridge.

The pensionable scale of stipends for this post is on the University Lecturer scale, supplemented to parity with the NHS consultant scale (£50,810 to £66,120).

Clinical Lecturer/Specialist Registrar (Virology)

Applications are invited for a Clinical Lecturer post in Virology to take up appointment as soon as possible. This post provides an opportunity to develop research projects, complete professional training in Virology, engage in clinical duties, and participate in a variety of teaching programmes in the ambience of a major teaching hospital.

Applicants are expected to have completed a minimum of two years' general professional training in approved posts and MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification is highly desirable. The appointment will be for four years initially (renewable after review for two years) and carries a national training number. The successful candidate will be based in the Virology section of the Clinical Microbiology and Public Health Laboratory at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and will be a member of the Virology Division of the University Department of Pathology.

The pensionable scale of stipends for this post is £25,015, rising by ten annual increments to £43,245.

University Lecturer in the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics

Applications are invited for a University Lecturer in the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics, which is housed in both the Departments of Earth Sciences and Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. The Institute invites applications from mathematically oriented scientists whose research is in any area of the application of physics and mathematics to understanding the Earth. The Lecturer will be part of an already flourishing and expanding multi-disciplinary group. Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £22,299 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,050.

University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of English (American Literature)

The Faculty is seeking to appoint, at University Assistant Lecturer level, to a newly established post in American Literature. The appointment will be effective from 1 October 2002. Applications will be welcome from those working in any field of American Literature. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £19,681 rising by five annual increments to £24,435. An appointment at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible reappointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

Posts in the Management Information Services Division

Senior Computer Officer (Operations Support Manager)

A vacancy exists for a Senior Computer Officer, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post holder will be responsible for the efficient operation of the application hardware and software infrastructure, management of the operations support staff, and for the computer room environments. Duties will involve liaison with third party suppliers, liaison with development and functional staff, and the candidate will also be responsible for the efficiency of job scheduling, security, and reporting provisions. Candidates should be educated to degree level and have operational and management experience in a large distributed environment.

The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. Appointment will be at Senior Computer Officer Grade for which the pensionable stipend is £39,590 a year.

Senior/Grade I Computer Officer (Oracle Database Administrator)

A vacancy exists for a Senior Computer Officer or Computer Officer Grade I, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post holder will be expected to perform all aspects of Database Administration in these environments, working closely with system administration and support staff, and liaising with third parties. Candidates should be educated to degree level or equivalent with extensive DBA experience in an Oracle environment. Experience of Unix system administration and/or Oracle Financials would be an advantage.

The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. Appointment will be at Computer Officer Grade I, or, in the case of an exceptional candidate, at Senior Computer Officer level. The pensionable stipend for a Computer Officer, Grade I, is up to £34,390 a year and for a Senior Computer Officer is £39,590 a year.

Computer Officer, Grade I (Unix Administrator)

A vacancy exists for a Computer Officer, Grade I, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The post holder will be expected to perform all aspects of Unix Administration in these environments, working closely with system administration and support staff, and liaising with third parties. Candidates should be educated to degree level or equivalent with extensive experience of Unix administration, security issues, backup and recovery, and Sun hardware. Exposure to an Oracle environment and/or database administration would be advantageous.

The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade I, is £21,290 a year, rising by twelve annual increments to £34,390. The starting point will depend on experience and age.

Assistant Lectureship in the Department of Geography (in conjunction with Fitzwilliam College)

The Department of Geography, in conjunction with Fitzwilliam College, wishes to make a fixed-term, three-year appointment to an Assistant Lectureship in contemporary human geography. The preferred starting date is 1 October 2002, but other mutually agreeable starting dates can be considered. Applications from individuals who specialize in urban or economic geography will be especially welcome. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to Departmental lecture courses in contemporary human geography and, in addition, to undertake six hours of supervision teaching a week for Fitzwilliam College during term time. Other duties may include contribution to the Direction of Studies in Geography at Fitzwilliam College. The appointment will be associated with a Fellowship at Fitzwilliam College. This entails membership of the Governing Body and the privileges and responsibilities associated therewith.

Initial appointment will be on the University's Assistant Lectureship scale (£19,486 rising by five annual increments to £24,193). Further particulars may be obtained from Professor A. D. Posts in the Research Services Division

Head of Legal Group (Maternity Cover)

The Research Services Division is seeking an inspiring leader for the Legal Group, whilst its founder and current Head takes a one-year maternity break. The work is varied and exciting and covers many aspects of intellectual property, contract, and commercial law. An ability to relate both to the academic community and the business world is essential, as is the capacity to manage a team of lawyers with a fluctuating, and, at times, heavy work load. You will have a high degree of independence and must be able to balance priorities. You will be able to demonstrate initiative and will possess good interpersonal, organizational, and managerial skills. Salary is negotiable, depending on experience.

Legal Adviser

The Research Services Division is seeking a Legal Adviser to join the Legal Group. This position is needed to advise on the protection and commercial exploitation of intellectual property and other contractual matters arising from externally funded research contracts and agreements relating to commercial exploitation. An inherent part of the Adviser's role will be to facilitate sponsorship of research by providing prompt and practical advice and support to members of the Research Services Division. You will need an excellent knowledge of contract and intellectual property law, preferably with experience of a research culture. The salary will be in the range of £22,299 to £34,390 depending on experience.

Project Manager in the Corporate Liaison Office (Regional Infrastructure for Innovation)

Regional Infrastructure for Innovation is a significant project (http://www.clo.cam.ac.uk/rii/) that aims to harness the capabilities of the universities in the East of England for the economic development of the entire region. Eight universities have been awarded £4.5m to facilitate innovation and technology transfer, increasing competitiveness and entrepreneurship through engagement of the universities with the region's businesses. There will be high expectations of this project and of its manager, and so the individual appointed to this senior and influential role will ideally have well-developed capabilities and experience in entrepreneurial business and regional development, experience of university/industry relations, creativity, drive, and diplomacy.
