Cambridge eScience Centre

SECOND CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR MAJOR FUNDING OF SUITABLE PROJECTS

The Cambridge eScience Centre, which is based in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, has a remit from the DTI to promote eScience research in East Anglia. It will fund projects that require access to very large data collections, very large scale computing resources, or high-performance visualization. It is part of a national network connected through SuperJanet. It offers access to major supercomputer facilities, using a package of Grid software based on the Globus standard. It will employ staff to give technical support. The projects that it supports must have a matching level of funds from industrial sources.

The Management Committee met on 7 September and selected a first group of four projects to propose to the DTI. They will involve several institutions in the region and will cover a wide variety of research, including videoconferencing for medical diagnosis, the creation of a molecular database, radar reflection from aircraft, and disposal of nuclear waste. The total funding proposed for these projects is in the region of one million pounds.

Further proposals are invited for the Committee to consider at its next meeting on 18 October. Applicants should consult the Director of the Cambridge eScience Centre, Dr Andy Parker (parker@hep.phy.cam.ac.uk). The Centre's temporary web site can be found at http://www.cms.cam.ac.uk/grid.html/.
