University offices: Vacancies

The University follows an equal opportunities policy and has a policy on arrangements for part-time work.

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Engineering

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers to take up appointment on dates to be determined. The Appointments Committee concerned hope soon to be in a position to appoint to these offices and are seeking to make appointments in the fields listed below. The persons appointed will be expected to play their part in the general teaching of the four-year course leading to the B.A. and M.Eng. Degrees.

(i) Microwave Communications: preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates with an active research record in the field. The person appointed will be expected to develop a significant research activity in microwave communications systems, particularly in relation to the design and analysis of new and existing systems, and to contribute strongly to teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels.

(ii)  Communication systems and networks: preference will be given to suitably qualified applicants with a record of excellence in research in the field and an ability and enthusiasm for teaching. The person appointed will be expected to undertake systems and applications research in the area of communication pathways between individuals and machines.

(iii) Power electronics: preference will be given to suitably qualified candidates with an active record of research in the area of solid state electronic devices for switching, conditioning, and controlling electrical power. The person appointed will be expected to contribute strongly to teaching over a broad range of subjects, including electromagnetics, electrical and electronic circuits, semiconductor devices, and power electronics.

Appointments will be made at either University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level, depending on the age of the person appointed, and will be for three years or five years, with the possibility, for a University Lecturer, of reappointment to the retiring age or, for a University Assistant Lecturer, of reappointment for two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

University Lecturer: £19,371 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £29,875.
There is no grade of Senior Lecturer.
University Assistant Lecturer: £16,045 a year, rising by six annual increments to £21,016.

Computer Officer in the Department of Physics

Computer Officer, Grade II, in the Department of Physics, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Appointments Committee concerned hope soon to be in a position to appoint to this office. The Computer Officer will act primarily as computing system manager and administrator for the Theory of Condensed Matter research group in the Cavendish Laboratory. The computing system currently consists of twenty-seven workstations, twenty-five PCs, and associated backup and printing facilities. The successful candidate will be an experienced Unix systems administrator; experience with NT would be useful. Other duties will include development, supervision, and management of the group network, responsibility for computer security, running the tape backup system, purchase and installation of hardware and software, and providing general computing support and advice. In addition, the Computer Officer will be the first person responsible for the operation of the Unix backup system in the whole of the Cavendish Laboratory. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipend is £21,894 a year, rising by four annual increments to £25,552.

Secretary of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art

Secretary of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art to take up appointment as soon as possible. The main role of the Secretary is to manage the administration of the Faculty and its two Departments, with delegated responsibilities from the Heads of Architecture and History of Art. Candidates should have relevant experience in the preparation of budgets and oversight of accounting procedures, staff management, committee administration, and development and supervision of office procedures. Familiarity with computerized administrative systems would be a distinct advantage. The person appointed will be a good communicator, with the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of staff. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time or, where appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable stipend for this post is £18,494 a year, rising by five annual increments to £22,785.

Librarian in the Faculty of History

Librarian in the Faculty of History, to take charge of the Seeley Historical Library, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Librarian is responsible for all references and reader services, collection development, library staff, and administrative planning. The Library possesses a substantial book and periodicals budget. Candidates should have a good honours degree and a postgraduate qualification in library or information studies. A Chartered Librarian with several years' experience in academic librarianship would be preferred. A background in history is desirable. A knowledge of automated library systems and MARC cataloguing is essential. The appointment is for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age.

The pensionable scale of stipends for the Librarian of the Faculty of History is £16,927 a year, rising by seven annual increments to £22,785.
