Elections, appointments, reappointments, and grant of title

The following elections, appointments, reappointments, and grant of title have been made:

Elections

Professor G. A. J. Amaratunga, Ph.D., CHU, B.Sc., Wales, Professor in Electrical Engineering, University of Liverpool, elected Professor of Engineering 1966 (Grace 5 of 1 December 1965) from 1 September 1998.

Professor B. R. Cheffins, whose election into the S. J. Berwin Professorship of Corporate Law was announced in Reporter 1996-97, p. 898, took up the appointment on 1 January 1998.

Mr W. T. Gowers, B.A., Ph.D., T, University Lecturer, Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, elected Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics from 1 October 1998.

Professor R. H. Helmholz, Ruth Wyatt Rosenson Professor of Law, Washington University, has been elected Arthur Goodhart Visiting Professor in Legal Science from 1 October 2000 to 30 September 2001.

University Lecturers

  Astronomy. Ms C. J. Clarke, M.A., CL, D.Phil., Oxford, appointed from 1 January 1998 for three years.

Engineering. Mr A. H. Gee, B.A., Ph.D., Q, appointed from 1 January 1998 for three years.

History. Mr E. F. Biagini, R, Ph.D., Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, appointed from 1 January 1998 for three years.

Physics. Mr G. A. C. Jones, M.A., R, B.Sc., Ph.D., North Wales, appointed from 1 January 1998 to the retiring age.

Computer Officer

  Anatomy. Mr R. Beardwell, B.Sc., Sheffield, appointed Computer Officer, Grade III, from 1 February 1998 for five years. The duties of the office also concern the Department of Experimental Psychology.

Technical Officers

  Engineering. Mr R. M. Taylor, B.Eng., Sheffield, appointed from 1 January 1998 for five years.

Physics. Mr M. Crofts and Mr B. A. Wood appointed from 1 January 1998 for five years.

Head of Department

  Social Anthropology. The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology, have appointed Dr S. P. Hugh-Jones, K, Head of Department from 1 August 1998 for three years.

Acting Heads of Departments

  Biological Anthropology. The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology, have appointed Dr R. A. Foley, K, Acting Head of Department for Lent Term 1998.

Slavonic Studies. The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages, have appointed Dr C. E. Ward, R, Acting Head of Department from 1 October 1998 to 30 June 1999.

Reappointments

University Assistant Lecturers

  Chemical Engineering. Dr G. D. Moggridge, K, reappointed from 1 April 1998 for two years.

Linguistics. Dr K. M. Jaszczolt, N, reappointed from 1 October 1998 for two years.

Assistant Directors of Studies in General Practice

  Clinical Medicine. Dr J. R. Perry and Dr A. J. S. White, JN, reappointed from 1 July 1998 for three years.

Senior Language Teaching Officer

  Italian. Dr A. G. Natali, G, reappointed from 1 October 1998 for five years.

Technical Officer

  Physics. Mr S. G. Willis reappointed from 1 October 1998 for five years.

Computer Officer

  University Computing Service. Mr D. J. Harrison reappointed Computer Officer, Grade III, from 1 November 1998 for five years.

Grant of Title

  Modern and Medieval Languages. Mr. K. Brusák, M.A., London, has been granted the title of Affiliated Lecturer from 1 October 1997 for a further two years.
