What you’ll do
Be introduced to the cyanotype process, an early photographic printing technique known for its distinctive blue tones

Learn how to prepare and coat paper with light-sensitive solution

Use daylight and a UV exposure unit to develop your prints

Create botanical compositions using pressed plants, lace and found objects

Experiment with layering drawings and photographic negatives on acetate

Take inspiration from the house and its collection

What to expect
Small group, limited to 8 people

Studio-based, hands-on and supportive

No experience needed

Time to experiment with a range of materials and techniques

A glimpse inside the house during the lunch break for inspiration

Lunch included from Norfolk Street Bakery

What to bring
An old apron and rubber gloves, as the solution can stain clothing

Any dried plant materials, objects or black-and-white images on acetate you’d like to use

A folder or portfolio to transport your prints home safely

All other materials provided, including a selection of pressed plants, vintage objects and imagery

About Cyanotype
Cyanotype is a simple and rewarding photographic process that uses UV light to produce rich Prussian blue images. Inspired by the natural and decorative details of the house, this workshop encourages a playful, experimental approach. Through layering, exposure and chance, your prints will evolve as you work, often leading to unexpected and satisfying results.

About Susie Turner
Susie Turner is a visual artist and educator specialising in fine art printmaking. She studied at Cambridge School of Art (BA) and Camberwell College of Arts (MA), and began her career as an illustrator before moving into printmaking. Her work explores themes of nature, transformation and our relationship with the environment, often using traditional processes in contemporary ways. Alongside her studio practice, Susie has over 20 years’ experience leading workshops and teaching across a range of settings, including the Hepworth Wakefield, the National Trust and Kettle’s Yard.
