This year’s annual lecture of the Friends of the Pepys Library, Cambridge, will be given by Dr Elaine Murphy of the University of Plymouth, who will discuss "Samuel Pepys, the Stuart Navy and the Role of Women". The respondent will be Dr Sara Caputo, Senior Research Fellow of Magdalene College. Following the lecture, there will be a Q&A session and the event will conclude with a drinks reception in the Denis Murphy Gallery, Cripps Court.

Speakers
Dr Elaine Murphy is Associate Professor of Maritime and Naval History at the University of Plymouth where she teaches naval and pirate history. Her research focuses on naval history in the seventeenth-century and she has published a number of books maritime aspects of the 1640s and 1650s. Her books include The British Civil Wars at Sea, 1638-1653 (with Richard Blakemore, Boydell and Brewer, 2018) and Ireland and the War at Sea (RHS, 2012). Her current work examines the interactions and experiences of women with the British Navy in the seventeenth century and she is writing a book based on this research entitled Women and the Stuart Navy.
Dr Sarah Caputo is Senior Research Fellow at Magdalene College and British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cambridge Department of History and Philosophy of Science, as well as Affiliated Lecturer at the Faculty of History. Her work focuses on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century transnational maritime history, British and European imperial history, the history of medicine, and the history of mapping. She is the author of Foreign Jack Tars: the British Navy and Transnational Seafarers during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and Tracks on the Ocean (Profile Books, forthcoming).
