Café Sci Cambridge: The surprising science of fatherhood
Wed 13 November 2019
Espresso Library
In our November Café Sci, we’ll look at the role of fathers from a biological perspective, exploring the idea, perhaps contrary to received wisdom, that men are biologically and psychologically prepped to become fathers. Anna Machin is an evolutionary anthropologist based at the University of Oxford and will present latest research into the hormonal and brain changes a man undergoes as he becomes a father and the unique contribution this makes to a child’s development. Anna will examine evidence that men can experience perinatal mental health issues, and more generally, explore the impact that fatherhood can have upon mental state. Anna will make reference to her 2018 book, The Life of Dad in which she sets out a decade-long study exploring the science of fatherhood.
