Made in Ancient Egypt

From elaborately decorated coffins to the Books of the Dead, ancient Egyptians produced objects which remain iconic today. But who were the makers behind them and how were they made?

An exhibition of paintings and monoprints by Benita Kevill-Davies

Fri 28 November - Thu 8 January 2026

Clare Hall

Experience a striking new exhibition of paintings and prints by Benita Kevill-Davies, opening to the public at Clare Hall on Friday 28 November. Known earlier in her career for landscapes and seascapes, and long immersed in the creative atmosphere shaped by her husband’s stained glass practice, Kevill-Davies now turns her attention to barrows, the ancient earth and stone mounds that once served as communal burial sites from the Neolithic to the Iron Age.

This body of work reaches both backward and forward. It reflects on these prehistoric forms while imagining contemporary human moments that echo timeless themes, such as the pause of waiting when time seems suspended and life’s direction feels uncertain. Although rooted in figurative ideas, the pieces rely on a minimalist approach and intentionally limited techniques.

Colour is the driving force throughout the exhibition. Kevill-Davies describes it as central to her life, a force that shapes the subject, creates structure, and opens emotional space. Its richness gives the exhibition much of its immediate appeal. Yet the impact goes further. These unusual images linger in the mind, drawing viewers back and offering the kind of quiet recognition usually reserved for familiar companions.

This curious and rewarding show invites visitors to look deeply and return often. It is well worth a visit.
