This spectacular event, taking place in the Pembroke Auditorium as part of the Pembroke College Music Society's 'Saturdays at 5' series, will see 40 years' worth of members of the Cambridge University Brass Ensemble (CUBE) come together in a celebration of brass music. CUBE was founded in October 1984, and some of the founding members reunite for this performance as well as many players from the subsequent 40 years.
The first part of the concert will be given by the current CUBE quintet, starting with the very fanfare that Witold Lutoslawski wrote for CUBE on the occasion of his Honorary Degree in 1987 (his 'Fanfare for CUBE'), moving on to the hauntingly beautiful Quintet by Michael Kamen followed by excerpts from Gershwin's 'Porgy and Bess'.
The second part of the concert sees a move into larger repertoire for symphonic brass, with some of the favourite original works from that repertoire by Bliss, Barber, Grieg and Strauss, plus Morten Lauridsen's own arrangement for brass of his choral classic 'O Magnum Mysterium'.
The concert closes with a spectacular version for massed brass of Susato's 'La Mourisque' (from the Danserye), arranged by David Lancaster and conducted by Christopher Lawrence, both founder members of CUBE from 1984.
