Join the Cambridge University Wind Orchestra and Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra for a joint concert in West Road Concert Hall!
In the first half, the Cambridge University Wind Orchestra performs two works from two of the most prolific composers for wind band. Gorb’s Awayday provides a vibrant and punchy concert opener, whilst Ellerby’s Paris Sketches, a four movement suite each depicting a different landmarks across the city, explores the soundscapes of Paris, from the atmospheric depiction of the Latin Quarter to the lively and bustling streets of Pigalle.
CUWO are then joined by the musicians from CUJO for the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, in their fantastic transcription for wind band by Paul Lavender. Bernstein’s score to the show surely needs no introduction, immortalised from its various production across the world, as well as two film adaptations, the first in 1961, and more recently a 2021 film directed by Steven Spielberg. This set of symphonic dances contains plenty of favourites from the show, from Somewhere to Mambo!
In the second half, CUJO return to the stage to perform a set of repertoire from big band standard, swing, funk and a number of classic vocal charts!CUJO is Cambridge's premier vehicle for promoting and performing jazz in the University and beyond, bringing together the top jazz musicians in the University. They have performed in numerous professional venues in the UK and overseas on national and international tours, won gold awards in UK-wide big band competitions and have collaborated with world-famous musicians, composers and arrangers such as Steve Waterman, Mark Nightingale, Trish Clowes and Yazz Ahmed.
