Sounds New Cambridge: The Centre for Music Performance presents New Music at the Fitzwilliam Museum
Fri 20 March
Fitzwilliam Museum
This mixed genre performance will feature three acts highlighting new music in the University of Cambridge, as part of the Centre for Music Performance’s Sounds New Festival:
The Kashim Duo, formed of siblings Imaan Kashim (Violin) and Jamaal Kashim (harp), are a chamber group in the Centre for Music Performance’s flagship Instrumental Award Scheme (IAS). They will be performing a world premiere by Glenn Downie, a Ph.D. candidate in composition at the Faculty of Music. Downie’s piece, commissioned for this concert, will be responding to the artwork of the Fitzwilliam’s Gallery 1.
Kathryn Gallagher is a sing-songwriter studying music at King’s College. This year she is part of the Centre for Music Performance’s Advanced Popular Performance Scheme, receiving one-on-one mentorship and regular performance opportunities. She will be performing a set of original songs, self-accompanied on guitar and keys.
The Tarka Ensemble are a clarinet quintet formed of some of Cambridge’s finest student chamber instrumentalists. Clarinettist Lola Frisby Williams was joint winner of the 2024 University of Cambridge Concerto Competition, performing Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto alongside the Cambridge University Orchestra (CUO) in 2024. She is joined by CUO concert master Tara Spencer (Violin I), principal second violin Elsa Chung, principal violist Clio Proffitt, and IAS cellist Ola Kiezun. They are performing Gumboots by living British composer David Bruce.
