For Those Who Don’t Want to be Found
Mon 11 November 2024 - Fri 20 December 2024
Alison Richard Building
Join us for an exhibition reception on Thursday 21 November from 17.30 – 20:00 for drinks in the atrium of the Alison Richard Building. All welcome!
About the exhibition:
‘For Those Who Don’t Want to Be Found’ is an exploration of disputed territory. It’s an exhibition that thinks about space, place and the way that personal histories connect the two; the way we come to see, know and inhabit our surroundings, as well as the technologies that record and distort them. The turning point of the uncanny, the moment when the familiar becomes unfamiliar, is a resonating concern as are the forces that determine one’s ‘right’ to remain. Changing corporeality, changing materiality.
Underpinning each of these strands is a personal preoccupation with disappearance, a process we might wish to counteract to recover someone or something lost, or which we might wish to practise as a form of escape.
All the works shown, from synaesthetic paintings to excoriations of pure gold leaf, from films made using ‘dead’ equipment to digital syntheses of communal cultural capital – present secret places and divulge secret histories. Ritualistic in composition, powerfully symbolic in form and often imbued with the matter of the experiences that informed them, the works in this exhibition trace lines of disappearance or otherwise issue clarion calls towards such vanishing acts. They are open portals to other places.
