Richard Harries is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the author of more than 30 books on the interface of Christian faith with literature, the visual arts, politics and ethics. Among them is Haunted by Christ: modern writers and the struggle for faith, in which he has chapters on both Eliot and Auden. His new book is Wounded I sing: Advent to Christmas with George Herbert.
After a ministry as parish priest, theological lecturer and Dean of Kings College, London he was Bishop of Oxford from 1987-2006. On his retirement he was made a life peer as Lord Harries of Pentregarth and sits on the crossbenches where he remains active in the House of Lords. For more than 50 years he has been a regular contributor to ‘Thought for the Day’ on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
After the Lecture, Newnham College are generously hosting a drinks reception, where you can chat with the hosts, other Society members, and Eliot authorities and enthusiasts.
