Following the Science? Trust and Truth in a Post-Truth World

Thu 27 March

Emmanuel College

Why should we trust a weather forecast, or a climate projection? Maintaining public and user trust is as critical as accuracy if good forecasts are to deliver benefit.

Professor Penny Endersby, Chief Executive of the Met Office will talk to us about how weather and climate predictions are produced, and how new Machine Learning techniques may change this in the future. She will also draw on her experience as a director at Dstl Porton Down during the Salisbury Poisonings, observing the Russian disinformation campaign from a position of inside knowledge versus her experience as a lay-person trying to sift through Covid advice during the pandemic.

In context of her role as Canon Scientist at Exeter Cathedral, we will discuss what this means from for faith communities with our responsibilities to our fellow humans and for stewardship of our planet.
