About the SOAS Min’yo Group
The SOAS Min’yo Group is an inclusive community music group who gather at SOAS, University of London, to learn and perform Japanese folk songs (min’yo). With members ranging from their teens to their 70s, some who speak Japanese, some not, yet all love the music. The group features singers, shamisen players, shakuhachi players, percussionists, flute players and dancers, welcoming absolute beginners to participate alongside advanced players and singers. Since their founding by the late Dr David Hughes, they have performed regularly at the Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar Square, at Sheffield and Durham universities, the Southbank Centre, and at the Japanese Embassy in London. International performances have also followed in Denmark and at the Llangollen Eisteddfod. They now come to Cambridge.
