1848: Resonances of a 19th Century Revolution

Homerton College will be presenting an interview with Sir Christopher Clark, Regius Professor of History at St. Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge, on the occasion of his new book Revolutionary Spring: Fighting for a New World 1848/49 (Penguin 2023) on Tuesday 12th March 2024 at 5.30pm in The Great Hall of Homerton College.

The world leading scholar of Modern Europe will walk us through the history of what is probably “the only truly European revolution”, a shared political and social experience that led to the formation of a new European politics. A discussion will centre around the role of the historian nowadays and on the challenges of being an historian in the public eye. Thinking about the revolutionaries in 1848, who belonged to a world that had not yet encountered the great disciplining identities of modern politics, could help in thinking about the world in which we belong today, where those identities seem to be swiftly dissolving.

Sir Christopher Clark FBA is an Australian historian living in the United Kingdom and Germany. He is the twenty-second Regius Professor of History at the University of Cambridge. He was knighted in the 2015 Birthday Honours list for services to Anglo-German relations.
